can of petrol vs diesel
I know this is a silly question but i just want to be sure. We have a can of fuel and we are not sure if it is petrol or diesel.
Any acid test? It burns quite sooty and feels greesy so i suspect dirty D but are there any other tests?
Thanks chaps and chapesses

Smells totally different.
Or tip some on a hard surface and leave overnight, if its evaporated its petrol, if not its diesel.
David
PS - You can drop a lit ciggy into a jar of diesel and it wont go up. Do the same with petrol and you'll lose your eyebrows

No strictly true, Petrol as a liquid is not flamable. Its only the vapour which is flamable. Drop a match into a can and it'll go out. Hold
one over the fuel and you'll get fire.

Take a few good strong sniffs. If it makes you happy and giggly, it's petrol. If it gives you nothing more than a grubby nose, it's
diesel.

Diesel feels greesy if you run it through your fingers. And petrol has a stronger smell.
Every petrolhead should know the difference, right??

Im not sure the feel would be any different, as they are both oil based, but definitely the smell would give it away.
Kindest Regards,
Richard.

Diseasil is greasy, petrol dries your skin out.
Or as Ricky from Trailer Park Boys says "Regular tastes sour, premium tastes a little tangy and diesel actually tastes pretty good"

Errrm?
If you can't remember/don't know what it is, where did you get it/find it?
How much is there?
How old is it likely to be?
unless you're going to lob it in your petrol mower I'd say ditch it (properly at the local recycling place).

The smells completely different. Go to the tank of your tintop and have a sniff. Then sniff the can. It'll either smell the same or different.
Only question then is what's in your tintop. But if you don't know that, there's a whole load of other issue more important than
what's in the can
You can tell I drive a DERV car now, a tdi drove past the other day sounding like a whiny tractor and I thought "kwor, that smells
good"!!!! Normally I only think that with un-cat'd RON98

Dip your finger in it. If the smell disappears within an hour, it's petrol. If you can still smell it after a couple of weeks, it must be
diesel...

If it's greasy and you can light it easily then it could be Parafin.

I agree - he should sell his Tiger, and donate the money to us, then he should stand in the corner of the room until he has learned his lesson!

Cripes thats a lot of replies!!
The problem was that we just got a new can od dirty D and up it in the garage right next to what we thought was petrol. We then could not remember
which was which and they both looked/smelt/burnt the same.
Turns out that they were both dirty D...
Thanks everyone!

My bodge advice would have been to fill your car and then chuck it in, at worst it'll feel a bit poo for a while... Provided the cans
aren't that big!
