Any structural engineers on here ?
Ive been busy building for the last 4 months but not on the car, instead Ive been building a new playroom..... i mean garage!
Now my plan is to have a pitched roof with open space so no trusses or at least limited amount of trusses.
Construction and fabrication isnt a problem cos my brother can help and is used to this kind of fabrication but I need to design it corectly and
provide evidence/structural calculations to prove to the building inspector that the roof is up to the job.
I can email a copy of the basic plans+measurements that ive drawn up.
Its 9.5M long 5.6M wide at rear and 3.6 at front.
Anybody out there willing to work for beertokens?

Bit too far for me and the boys but my truss roof is capable of holding up the church roof! All coded as the calculations dictated but I look at the
single skin brick on the outside wall amd wonder how long....

Is'nt there planning permission needed for this size of project? And therfore plans?

No i enquired with the council giving all the details and they replied with a nice letter saying it aint needed. All I had to do was give building
notice.

Giving such advice 'for beer tokens' is a bad idea for both you and the engineer.
You're really better off to get someone local and pay the going rate. You are buying considerable professional indemnity insurance and this
really isn't there for someone doing a homer. Then there's the fact that the institute of structural engineers most probably forbid any of
their members from giving casual advice.
I'm not an engineer, I'm a Building Surveyor and the RICS strictly forbids any of us from giving out any advice in such a fashion. If it
goes wrong, you bring the whole profession into disrepute.
Sorry to be a killjoy, but I think you need to pay the going rate.
Incidentally, the bottom chord of the truss is seriously important. Not having many trusses or no trusses is not to be done without very serious
consideration at the initial design stage.

Thanks for the info. Im not after casual advice just some one qualified who maybe is self employed or can do the work from home cos so far I
havn't found any company who seems interested in domestic work.
Ive been waiting 2 days now for a phone call from a Truss manufacturer with a rough price. i dont mind waiting as long as they will give me a price
and not just throw my request in the bin!

I thought they would be, I've just build a house and thought I would ask as mine were a little more obvious.

word of warning we put a roof on the brother in laws roof a decent pitch used 3 inch timber for the trusses (over engineered, the building inspector
still demanded mor e timber. I would call him out and ask what he wants

Did you explain fully to the planning department what you were doing? Anything attached to the present structure should come under planning
regulations and require inspection. Are you looking at an apex roof or tying a pent roof in on the side of the house where the window on the wall may
be your limiting factor. If you could build up the ends and match the angle of your house roof it would be a reasonable solution.

I'm very surprised you didn't need to apply for planning permission and building regulation approval. Afterall your putting in additional
foundations for a domestic dwelling and going close to your border.

control are involved as I said "building notice given" (the building inspector comes out perodically and so far all ok)
