Credit Card fraud - beware

Bit of a story but,

I had a SKY credit card up until middle of last year. The card was "underwritten by Barclaycard" and when SKY decided they wanted out of the credit card game, they gave the opion of a new Barclaycard. We did not want this option, and so wrote a recorded delivery letter to SKY and informed them we do not require or want the Barclaycard option.

Thought no more of it until I get a call from a Barclaycard fraud team member, asking if I had spent £9530 on my Barclaycard in the past 3 days. This would be the Card theat I never received. I had to go through all sort of security checks, and almost felt like being interrogated on the phone.

It appears the Card was intercepted and never got to me. Someone at SKY got our letter and obviously passed all our security details onto a fraudster, who then contacted Barclaycard and changed our home address (this is the bit that annoys me - they did it over the Phone. Unfortunately the recording cant be found !!!! ). SO the new Barclaycard and PIN were sent to the "new address" in South London, where the recipient went and bought 3 LCD Tv's at a Cash & Carry before going to Milton Keynes and getting the rest in Cash from hole in the wall Machines.

It has all been squared away, and the Police have a "lead". What made me angry was when we got the obligitory letter from Barclaycard informing us how to be careful with our Cards and PINS. This was followed up by a guy in an Indian call centre calling me with the same advice - By time I had given him my own Advice on how they conduct their internal security - especially as he was not concerned I had forgot my security code and carried on regardless, I am not sure he will be calling me back again

Not sure what I could have done differently here, sent a rejection letter recorded delivery etc. I am now so Paranoid about giving any information to anyone.

It does make you wonder!

I can't see what else you could have done other than call Sky/Barclay card to follow up on the recorded delivery letter, but that shouldn't be necessary.

We had our A&L joint account hacked recently - they swept the money from the attached savings account into the current account, then emptied the lotright up to the overdraft limit. To give A&L their due it was rectified very quickly and we were not left out of pocket, but SWMBO insisted on moving to another bank thereafter.

SWMBO's also had her fraudulent transactions on her PayPal account to the tune of several hundred £. Again this was rectified very quickly and PayPal advised that they had recovered the funds themselves.

I've since started shredding everything remotely linked to ID, bankinig, bills etc.

My Santander online account has a good feature whereby you have to enter a one time security code for each payment transation. The code is sent via SMS to you phone which means the security is active rather than passive.

thats bad news, im sceptical about anyone having details especially when now all held abroad. As for companys recorded phone calls i think the warning they state at the start of a call is generally a bluff, ive twice requested review of tapes but been told 'we dont seem to have that one'.

couple of years back I had a call from the bank at 9am - had I just spent ~£5500 on my switch card last night and did I want to cancel the card

they never actually asked for any security info, but being paranoid I still didn't trust a random phone call from a withheld number, so I nipped into the branch (2min away)
and sure enough my account was cleaned out right up to the overdraft limit

all they could tell me was that whoever it was didn't have my pin or security code, just the details on the front of the card - which they could have got from any number of places (I blame a certain petrol station)

all I had to do was report it to the police (over the road from the bank) and give the bank the crime number.
she says: it'd take a couple of days to sort out and get new cards, so how much cash did I want to get me by in the mean time ?
- £500
- is that all, you could have the full £5.5k if you want
and aparently they 'sorted' it so my direct debits whouldn't bounce aswell

the bank were really helpful and it was all sorted in less than a week - but its still a real hassle

(thats with RBS btw)

The tapes are 'unofficially' purely there for the organisations protection, and will only be used for that reason.

I remember many years ago whilst I was at uni, working as a supervisor at the local supermarket, I intercepted a well known shoplifter.

He made last minute bid for freedom and shoved me out of the way, I slightly over-reacted and decked him!

Strangly the video of me slapping the little scrote got recorded over!

Sky did credit cards? Run by Barclays? That sounds about right to me... Last complaint my missus had with them I was speaking to them for about 20 minutes as MRS Pinnington (not only am I a bloke putting on a deep voice it's not even the name on the card anymore) gave them the wrong expiry date and a few other details (my mobile number instead of hers etc.)

They eventually handed me over to the fraud department where my missus went apes**t about how I managed to talk to that idiot for so long!

Also they cancelled my card because I missed 3 payments in 6 months (my best payment record ever) and to top it off it was all their fault, as I gave them my direct debit details 34 times in those 6 months
