pub question! licensing hours rant
Guys,
Just a quick question in order to set my mind at ease!
First point, I hate poor customer service, but more so I hate young immature staff who have no idea about how to communicate with the general public.
I’m not an old duffer, I’m only 34 but even in my lifetime I have seen the quality of customer focus and service from front line staff drop off
steeply.
I go to the same pub every Tuesday night and have done for the last 18months, This is my night out where I catch up with the lads and have some bloke
time.
Last week the barmaid who is normally working on Tuesday nights was not on but the landlord himself was covering. When I enquired as to where she was,
he explained that with it being a little quiet on a Tuesday these days he has cut her hours down and he is covering himself now.
Last night when I went In I was greeted (well that being a bit complimentary) by a young girl whom I had never seen before. There were the normal
number of people in the pub for a Tuesday and we ordered a beer. The beer is normally served with a smile and a top up when you take the froth off
(that is the landlords way of doing things) This girl just poured the beer and lobed it on the bar.
We finished our beers and at 10.45pm I went to the bar to order another round. I was greeted with her sloughing backwards against the till with her
arms folded and she looked me in the eye and said ‘shut’ and shook her head. I assumed she was joking so made light of her comment and began to order
my round, she again exclaimed ‘shut’ and shook her head. I enquired as to whether she was taking the mick or not and she said, if we are quiet on a
Tuesday we always shut early! I explained that this is not the case and I have been here every Tuesday for the last 18 months but she maintained that
she was not serving any more beer.
She did not call last orders, and her general attitude was just plain wrong. I then enquired as to whether they had changed the licensing hours since
last week, or maybe I had adjusted my watch in my sleep and I as the customer must surely be in the wrong, all this went down like a fart in a space
suit with her.
She then went on to explain that the land lord was away ( what ever that has to do with the licensing hours is beyond me) then to explain the that
landlords wife was on her own upstairs – not a good thing to mention to a group of blokes you have never met before and don’t know from Adam!
As far as I am aware a PUB is a PUBLIC house and as such needs to be open (excluding exceptional circumstances) within its states licensing
hours??????? Am I right?
We get on well with the land lord and shall be complaining about this girls attitude and if the general consensus is that it is a quite pub on a
Tuesday night then if we 4-6 of us leave to take our custom elsewhere then it will be a shut up pub on a Tuesday evening I’m sure
Rant over!

i would say no. i think they're quite free to close early if they want. they just can't be open BEYOND the licensing hours.
still, not sure the land lord will be happy by her closing early...
what time is closing time on a tuesday? i think licensing hours are different up here

As Blake says - no they dont have to be open and the girl can actually refuse to serve you if she wishes.
Then again you can go and complain to the landlord and make sure she was damn right when she stated "she wont be serving any more beer"!!
She wouldnt be there long if it was my pub and she was costing me business. I'd also be docking her pay seeing as she closed early!!

No, she needs no grounds... The management reserves the right etc etc..... She can refuse to serve you if she just doesn't like your face!

Since 24 hour licensing, pubs can open and close as they wish.....
As said probably best have a word with the landlord, even if its just to ask what his hours are, then go on to tell him his new bar witch cost him £xx
of business last Tuesday......

she can close whenever she wants. public, in public bar doesn't mean you can treat the place like your living room

Not true. They can apply for a licence to open 24hrs but this can easily be refused - highly likely in residential areas etc. In reality not many pubs
have 24 hr licences and even fewer use them to the full.
Still, a licence allowing a pub to stay open until 11pm etc doesnt mean they have to stay open until that time.
Seems the main point is that the bone idle lazy slacker needs booting out the door for costing the landlord profits

Think the whole point is, that regardless of law or other wise, as a regular, if you feel like this, then that pub, as a business, is failing.
Its not an easy business to be in at the moment, and every customer is VERY important.
It also sounds like he's cut the hours/made redundant the previous barmaid, presumably on cost grounds, and the replacement is not really cut
out for the task.

Licensing hours are the maximum any pub can open. They can open when and close when they want.
