ADSL is the poor brother to cable I'm afraid, it all depends on how far you are from the exchange, and other excuses 
I love my cable connection, I switched from ISDN almost 10 years ago and have no complaints in all that time.
I'm now on 20Mb, speedtest says I'm getting what I pay for

your exchange seems really slow, do all your neighbours have same problem? thats assuming you have neighbours and not in middle of knowwhere!
im in a Norfolk village (which has a BT exchange though) came up with
Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial check on your postcode indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that
provides a fixed line rate up to 2Mbps.
Our check also indicates that your line currently supports a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 5.5Mbps or greater.

If you get a Meg, be happy. Here in this glorious locale of the undead (a part of Cornwall), Broadband isn't available.

Hmmm, the dongle must be on a "work" break cos it doesn't feel that fast. (It took nearly 2 minutes to bring up the preview of this
post)
Got Virgin 20mb at home though, and more often than not it registers 15meg+ (unless someone's playing Call of Duty!)
