I am fuming
Bought a bumper and headlight of someone breaking an Astra (ebay id: srichardson5051) and paid them through paypal (but not using ebay).
The items was promised to be in good condition, but arrived cracked, chipped and with mounts broken off. (and the items were clearly broken before
transit, as the bubble wrap is in perfect condition
Now, I tried getting in touch with them but no reply
And paypal just found the dispute in their favour as the items were not purchased through ebay.
So what are my chances of getting the money back through my credit card?
And beware that you get f*** all cover from paypal if you do not use ebay

Bugger!! Typical Paypal that though (as they are owned by Ebay).
Definately take it up with your credit card company though - nothing to lose but the price of a call at worst. Legally i'm not convinced you
have many rights though as you took it outside Ebay and did it as a purchase from a private individual.
Hope you get sorted anyway

Don't think you will have much chance personally, but has to be worth a phone call to credit card people to find out.

Or Trading Standards if he's a trader.
Check his feedback. If he sells a lot of stuff, he may be a 'hobby' trader.
Ask him if he has planning permission to run a business from home?
Ask him if he declares his additional income to the IRS?
This tactic has worked for me in the past when a smarrtarse on ebay tried to screw me.
Tell them about the bent treacle edges!

Was it at his insistance you paid outside of eBay?
Seems an odd way to pay when there is a pay now button.
If he's avoiding paypal fees asking for money as a gift report him to ebay, and try another claim.....

I will definitely not drop it.
I am particularly annoyed as it was broken before transit, so clearly a fraudulent sale on his part.
Not sure why I ever bothered with paypal now, if it does not cover me at all...
Will now have to insist that all items are first listed on ebay, if cant personally inspect.

no, that particular item was not listed on ebay.
and I did not insist on him listing it as I wanted to save him some money and thought I was covered anyway
wont do that again

Just seen how he's listing stuff, - breaking.... you are bidding on a wheel nut....
I think eBay should stop this practice, everything should be listed individually.
A lot of crap feedback too.

yes i do admit that I was a bit careless not checking feedback properly,
A lot of people list cars for breaking like this
It is the first, and last, time I buy from this though.

eBay do not allow the "wheel nut only" type scenarios as I found out when I started to list the cars we have at work
Just report it to eBay and they should pull his 'auctions'
It wont get your money back, but if I recall correctly, eBay do not refund his listing fees if a rule breach has taken place and they pull the ad

It's often quite easy to find out where someone lives from their internet trail. Start with their eBay sales. Then of course you can write to
them

I'm not sure I understand what relevance your Credit Card is in all this??? You paid with PayPal... not your Credit Card??? If so, then why
would your Credit card insurance be of any use???

Because the money ultimately comes from his credit card which is registered to his PayPal account.
Paypal is pretty useless at the best of times, but they absolutely will have nothing to do with any deal made outside of eBay.

feel for you mate. The only time I ever got caught out on ebay was under one of those " you are bidding on a wheel nut
listings"
bloody frustrating and never saw a penny back either.
you learn the hard way sometimes at least my loss was not a lot.
If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.

Ah! That explains that then!
I thought it was only Debit Cards that were compatible... perhaps I'll have to change my payment funding method!
Anyhow... hope you get it all sorted out!

Tricky, unless you can file a dispute via Paypal. Your credit-card company will expect you to make reasonable effort to get the cash back from the
seller first.
Is the seller a Migweb member? If so, someone might know him. a few strategic queries with details of the ropey parts you've received might
shake out a few more details.
Do hope you get sorted. This kind of stuff makes my blood boil...
Francis.

If any one is interested...
Called the credit card company this morning and all seems very positive.
So if anyone has similar issues with paypal, make sure you call your credit card.
