Home made boat Competition
Every year a mate of mine orgainses a race of some kind just for a laugh. Last year it was a Top Gear Style race to that big bridge in southern
france in hire cars. The cars were hired for a max of £70 quid and then £50 on upgrading them, with after market mods. Was a laugh.
This year we have to make a one man boat that has to race along a canal and then be taken out of the canal and carried for a short way then back into
another canal and raced further. Budget = £50
I am thinking rowing would be the best way but BORING! Either a high pressure water pump like a jetski or a thai style two stroke propeller driven
thing. Any ideas anyone?

My mate, a naval architect.
Has just designed and built a model catamaran for testing.
Its 1.7meters long. about 50 wide.
He reckons it would support a person.
you could use someting like that as a sled.

Sounds fun... but to have an engine then I think you'll need a permit to go on the canal. With people falling in the water/sinking would a Thai
style prop be a bad idea?

Jet Ski engine+jet in a kayak?  5mph might be an issue (as would the £50) - if they could catch you

i did a similar thing a few years back but without the lifting and carrying bit.
i used one of those lying down bikes (think they are called recumnant) chopped up with the rear axel extended out past the hull for a paddle steamer
effect. the hull was fabricated from old bits of skinny ply and sealed with resin.
the only thing that kept me from winning was being about 4 stone overwieght and seriousely unfit.
i did take home the prize for best design though.

longtail engine would be awesome! tbh though i reckon you would be simpler and lighter rowing.
canvas covered wood frame centre canoe hull with a pair of small outriggers would be a good start.

I think a cheap outboard from ebay might be the best bet with a wooden boat made from offcuts (I have lots of offcuts)
He has looked into getting permits and he said its £31 quid.
However I am inclined to say don't get a permit and just literally run away if we get caught.

maybe boring but the most efficient and reliable, assuming nobody drowns. 
what is the distance between the canals? that may make a big difference if you have to lug a boat and engine.
instead of thinking of engine power, you are better off spending your budget on making a lighweight and efficient paddle/row boat, do some training
and lay off the pies, assumig you are in it to win.

Is it going to be a mass start or going off at intervals?
Mass start would be a pain with oars.
Will you get help lifting it from the canal? That will be harder than actually carrying it.

Not sure of the details yet. The distance to travel on foot is very minimal. Apparently he's trying to organise a route that doesn't
involve the 'on foot' bit.
I am not in it to win really, that would be a bonus I suppose. I wouldn't even mind if I sank as long as it was in blaze of glory!

Ive got the very boat ready for the challenge here in Glenrothes.....got a trailer for it too
It was a BIC windsurfer and now has two poly outriggers on either side
Could get pix next time we are over there.
