Off to Japan soon for work, sightseeing recommendations needed
Off to Japan in July, going to be in Tokyo for a week, and might manage a few days in Kyoto as well.
So, what should I be seeing and eating while I'm there? I love all manner of Japanese culture weirdness, so the stranger the better.

Off the top of my head...
Tour of the Government buildings (2 x 70 storey towers, *very* fast lifts)
Shinjuku Central Park
Ropongi by day, Ropongi by night(very different animals)
Akihabara
The temple @ Asakusa
Tip I was told - Don't go to a sushi bar with a conveyor, they're the ones where it's not fresh
If you like beef, have shabu shabu at least once...
One of the few places I've been to with work that I *really* want to go back to.

Mega Web is one of the major amusement parks in Tokyo located in the Odaiba district. Primarily a Toyota showroom, this huge complex has a number of
halls where a large number of exhibitions related to motorcars and car accessories are held
+ Tokyo Disneyland

To eat, if you like meat, try the vietnamese bbq restaurants where you cook your own meat on a bbq in the centre of the table!

Kyoto is very nice and well worth a visit, there's some very nice temples there and plenty of history
Mt Fuji is also worth a visit if your in the area, there's a visitor centre half way up it. but if you fancy hiking up to the summit allow
plenty of time
Tokyo ginza area is worth going to especially on a Sunday when everybody seems to be there
Imperial palace is also worth a look but iirc it's only open at certain times of the year.
'Electric city' area is also worth a look to see some of the technology that we will get over here in a few years
The Train system is superb and always seems to run on time, its also easy to navigate your way around it
Been 6 times now and its the friendliest place in the world i've ever been to, they also love it if you try and speak a little of their
language
Don't be surprised if a complete stranger asks you for some help with their learning of english
There's plenty of different types of food to try and some of the restaurants have plastic models of the different dishes in the front window so
you'll have an idea of what it will look like when you order it
The local Beer ain't bad either
Suzuka race circuit is worth a visit and there's usually something going on at weekends
We watched some of the F3000 and Japanese saloon championship
We also got very lucky and got an invite to an Indycar & F1 back to back test session aswell
Be aware that it ain't the cheapest country in the world to visit

Can I come with you
I have been to Japan many times as I had a Japanese girlfriend.
Go to Kyoto, it's a must do thing, great Temples shrines and geisha's.
I went to Motegi to see the Honda musium, I could have spent days there.
Shinjuku in tokyo, electric city for all the latest gadgets you never Knew you needed.
I would also recomend going to the kabuki theater near the fish market,(I think it is in Ginsa)
Get lost in tokyo station ,it's like the Tardis with an English looking facade and after entering countless moving stairs to dffering levels,
each with a rail platform.
Go on the shinkansen bullet trains for a fast ride just for the hell of it.
Go see the weird people in ripongi.
The Tokyo dome is worth a visit with the Laqua theme park next door.
If it all gets too much visit the Irish bar in Chiyoda.
For great eating places go to Chuo-ku,
Tsukishima, all traditional eating houses where you go through hell trying to sit cross legged on the floor, but there are usually places for us unfit
people to sit on small chairs.
I feel another visit is overdue for me.
Have a great time.
Denis.
Where did that go?

In Tokyo
Akihabara(=electric city) for electronics
Ueno for motorbike shops, the superb, Yodobashi camera shop, the park for the zoo and cherry blossom and all that crap.
Ropongi for night life and Tokyo tower. Tsukiji for fish market and Budhist Temple. Monzenakkacho = another Temple. Tokyo Disneyland if only to
see a load of Japanese dressed as cowboys. Funabashi-Hoten just outside Tokyo if you like horse racing. Imperial Palace in Nihombashi, Tokyo.
Mt. Fuji is a must. Get the coach from Shinjuku in Tokyo = about 90 minutes. If pos climb it at night aiming to get to the top at dawn. It's
not really a climb, just a long tedious walk, in a big queue of Japs.
Nigata prefecture is the home of koi carp.
Suzuka is worth a visit as is Hiroshima but both a long way from Tokyo and u'll probably be running out of time and money by then.
Be aware that it's a horrendously expensive country and not easy to travel around unless you speak a bit of the language. Food is no problem
cos they've got Macdonalds everywhere and Kirin is the best Jap beer.
Also there is more than one train company in Tokyo and the lines don't always interconnect or even use the same stations.

Thanks guys, some really great stuff there, much appreciated, I'll get a Lonely Planet and start marking them up
Been busting to go for to Japan for years with our business, and now the enconomy is better there it's looks like we can go, make a few quid,
and hopefully cover our costs at least.
I think I'll get an App for the iPhone to help with some basic words in Japanese, seem to already know a few from watching so many Japanese
movies
