Surge protectors are of very limited usefulness in the event of a nearby lightning strike IME. I had my ADSL router, VCR, and HIFI Amp smoked all at the same time due to lightning a few years ago, despite all being on surge protectors.

Years ago I was at my Bro's house in Romsey watching a storm come in from an upstairs front window. When it had passed us we went down stairs. Ten minutes later, Lightning HIT the house opposite, you should have seen the state of the wiring in that house. Ever since then I've not been worried by lightning, cos if you see it or hear it you are OK, if you don't see it or hear it then you probably have nothing to worry about any more.

Not hit, but close. Years ago I was driving along the M62 in a storm when it hit a sign in the middle of the roundabout at the turnoff I'd just passed. BIG flash, impressive bang, and lots of sparks as the the metal poll took the brunt of the strike. Actually woke the missus up
