Why cant gravel wagons secure thier load before setting off
Not sure if this is non car or car related.
[rant] driving to work yesterday morning and as I was going round a bend a gravel wagon came the other way for him it was a right hander. As he came
round the corner and the weight shifted he shed a load of gravel of the top of his wagon. Having had several loads on gravel millwaste etc delivered
i would estimate 1/4 to 1/2 ton slid off the side directly into the path of oncoming traffic.
I was in the middle of a line of 3 cars traveling within the 50 MPH speed limit but when i saw the gravel come off it would have been unsafe to stop.
Needless to say I drove through a substantial shower of gravel.
End result minimum of 24 stone chips in the windscreen, 40 on the bonnet several on the drivers side wing and pitting to the front valance and grill
and one clean pair on underwear required. Fortunately none of the garvel penetrated the grill to damage the rad and somehow the light all
survived.
Unfortunately I didnt get any of his details as he was around the bend and out of sight by the time I had got throught the gravel shower and there was
a line of traffic preventing me turning round to try and catch him up to get his details.
2 things would have prevented this happening:
1. not over filling the wagon in the first place.
2. Using a load cover.
So now I have to get my windscreen replaced, not possible until thursday and i have to take a half day off for that as the next day they can can do it
at my work is a week on wednesday, costing me my windscreen excess, and get the car to a bodyshop for an estimate for the other damage again costing
me my excess when its done, another £250

contact the police, the driver of the wagon caused damage to your vehicle, which makes it an accident in my book. Wagon driver left scene of accident
and driving negligently.

Snap same thing happened to my mother; very nasty, snag is you are normally to busy dealing with it to take the reg, and they don't stop as the
driver has no idea what's just happened (honestly)...
Resulted in smashed screen, crushed bonnet, total respray.. Not a cheap or pleasant experience and no way to prove whom it was...

always get a "passanger" to take photos and contact the police and make a official complaint to the company with proof of the issue.
they have a duty of care which if the load is not secure they are required to cover any damage caused.
i would suggest gettin pics of the unsecure load and then getting legal advise.
i got £300 for a new bonnet to repair a dint caused by a skip with unsecure load. a log hit my car. i followed it and took pictures and the company
just paid up. only cost £60 to get resprayed after i filled it.
dave
5 series with new bonnet.

Yes allways find it easy to take photo at 50mph with a lap full of gravel windscreen, and the lorry driver always stops (not)..

As somebody who drives gravel tippers from time to time.
That is completely unacceptable, he should have sheeted his load before setting off. That's why most tippers have automated sheeting devices
now, because it's classed as an unsafe, unsecured load, if not sheeted.
Trouble is, nowadays tippers aren't lettered out like they used to be, so they all tend to look the same making finding the offending driver
nearly impossible.
All it does is give responsible drivers a bad name.

report it to the police - you know location and approx time it happened so since there are billions of police and traffic cameras monitoring
every mm of road, the lorry shold have been photgraphed by one of them surely?
if you were on a bicycle, horse or motorcylce when that happened, you may not be here telling the story.

Get on to VOSA as well. They don't like overloaded lorries. The driver or vehicle operator is responsible for the damage to your car and
should pay for the repairs.

As said before its worth reporting,
I had a demolition wagon infront of me and going down a steep sliproad you would see lumps of stone coming off it bouncing down the road towards you,
luckily most disintegrated to a much smaller size before they hit.
As others on here thought, what if I was in my 7 or even in my own car with shiney paint work so I took his details and went and reported it to the
local police station when I got to site.
Got a call from the Police a few hours later saying they'd been down to their depot and observed numverous other wagons leaving without the
covers pulled over the load and appropriate action would be taken

Presumably he couldn't have been far from the depot if he'd managed to tip some out the top - might not be too difficult to figure out
where the nearest gravel place is, go and see if their trucks are painted the same as the one you saw....

Ive got a feeling I know exactly which gravel pit he came from unfortunately they have other hauliers carrying their stuff as well as their own
wagons.
I have seen several different names on wagons waiting to pull out of the entrance
Also didnt take note of the name on the front of the wagon was a bit busy bracing for the impact and squeezing bumcheeks so that i didnt sh1t myself
when it came

If the lorry driver is found I should imagine that the police will also do him for failing to stop at the scene of an accident. Defo report it.

I think that you could also argue that the company loading the offending vehicle could or might also be held liable as they allowed an overloaded or
insecure load to leave their site. I'm fairly sure that this could be successfully argued in a cort of law, especially in European.
A few photos of said vehicles leaving the site would do your case the world of good. Just remember that there are two ends to a piece of string.

Report it to the police
Years ago, a truck in Grece overloaded with some sort of laminated panels, was driving on a bend when the ropes broke and the panels slided to the
side and hanged outside of the lorry.
The bus coming the other way didn't have a chance.
I remember more than 20 children lost their lives as it was a bus on a school holiday trip.

Well went to the local police station last night and reported said incident.
The report now goes off to the national collision unit who will look for similar reports based on time area type of accident etc to see if someone
else has reported something.
Regards getting pics of offending wagon I couldnt swear as to where it cam from thats supposition, and we were moving in opposite directions with a
combined speed of approx 90 MPH
