So called "recycling" centre!!!
So following my bathroom renovation, I made my way over to the local recycling centre, to get rid of all my rubbish and throw away all my sorted
recycling at the same time..
Got there, started putting everything into the appropriate skips. The woman who was there to "assist" must have been one of Hitler's
long lost descendants, but did at least manage to point in the right direction.
At the end, after I'd thrown all my crap away, was making my way back to the car as a guy threw away a bike (bent) into the scrap skip.
I myself have a frame and forks/wheels in my garage which have been sitting there for ages which I wanted to build up into a cheap hack, so thought
"brilliant! if that's got all the little tiny bits I need, I'll save it!"
A brief examination of this discarded object did indeed reveal that its frame wasn't salvageable but all the other bits I needed were on it and
intact.
What happened next was a bit of a blur as I lifted the mangled frame, at which point the giant digger promptly rotated to face me, with the man in it
shaking his head, and Hitler's grand-daughter turning to me and saying
"You can't have that, it's scrap"
"This is a recycling centre, correct?"
"Yes"
"I want to recycle this...cycle"
"You can't, it's scrap. There's bikes over there in the shop"
"Presumably if you deemed they were good enough for your Harrods equivalent, they'd be in working order.. I just need some little
bits"
"Well you can't take anything that others threw away.. it's scrap"
I understand I may well be in the wrong and indeed am not allowed to take their "scrap" but what the hell?!? They'd rather throw it
away than let me take some useful bits from it so I can put another bike back on the road? The mangled frame would've been returned there by
myself anyway...
Please, somebody explain to me this insanity. Another guy seemed to manage to use this situation as a decoy and grabbed one of the bike's good
wheels whilst I was too busy fighting the nazi's. Good on him I say!

Probably to discourage pikies?
All that recycling plant and staff needs to be paid for so they make money of the scrap to subsidise the cost of waste disposal?

Idv have just taken it and went and told them to f off.
They probably wanted it to sell it for a quid to put in there pocket.

I saw an unused expensive mountain bike in the scrap metal skip at ours I watched in horror as two guys took great pleasure in throwing an engine
block on top of it.

They can't make much from the scrap metal it is so heavily contaminated with plastic and wood.

If they wanted to stick it in the shop and sell it for a bit, I would've totally understood.
But after I put it back, the guy with the digger simply pulled it back with all the other crap that was on top of it - definitely not coming out
ever!
It's a bloody waste it is...
Do they have any legal ground on which they can stop me from picking something out of the skip and walking off with it? Is it theirs?

One mans junk is another mans treasure and you were stealing their treasure......
At least that's how they see it. The recycling centre is probably contracted out and run by a private company. If everyone could help themselves
to the discarded junk, they'd be left with a load of rubbish. They need this value to offset the cost of waste disposal and also need to cover
their overheads and hopefully return a profit.

The law on skips is that once something is in the skip, it belongs to the skip owner. You can't take it. The skip owner has the right to
anything valuable in the skip as part payment for the operation of waste disposal.
They'll probably just weigh in the metal on the bike but it still pays towards the operation of the recycling centre.

At least they let people get rid of stuff there the one up the road from me only let you get rid of rubble 2 bags at a time! What job creates
only 2 bags!
Oh well, it turns out they dont like it when you turn up with a ton bag full of rubble and point out that its only 1 bag!

Similar thing happened to me, no point going into details - but I did get my own back.
I have a stainless ammo box, it is about 800mm x 500mm x 350mm and I took it to the skip and asked where they wanted it put, I was told to put it into
the 'reserve' skip by one of the silverbacks who had a particular gleam in his eye. I went over to the 'reserve' skip and
emptied the 50kgs of garden waste contained in my ammo box, before returning it to the car boot.
The expression of the neanderthal was priceless

The scrap yards take the contaminants into account when they set a price, you get £120 a tonne for washing machines, which include a large chunk of
concrete!

lol. This one makes me laugh... The Edinburgh council employees are always raking through the stuff in the skips for the treasure! Last time I asked
what they were looking for I was told - "Electricals, they are very dangerous when left in the landfill". That statement was made while
standing next to a pile of totally non electrical "treasure" that they fancied for their houses.

Being me, I had a wee lucky find recently.
Out visiting some people at work recently with my workmate. John has a gypo's eye for treasure. He had a tough tough upbringing but clawed his
way out of the ghetto. He's a boy done good, but his magpie eye has never left him.
Anyway, I went in to see the people while he turned the car.
On the kerb outside was a bunch of other folks junk waiting to go to the tip.
The bold lad had spotted a JVC hifi waiting to go in the back of the council bin lorry later that morning. He suggested we take it and if it really
was knackered, it's easy enough to get shot of it.
To cut a long story short, here it is. In the living room of Zil working 100 % spot on.
It's never going to be as good as my old Sony ES3000, but it didn't cost £500 per component and need furniture to house it
