OT - Surround Sound System. Advise please

Hi all

I'm looking at buying a Blueray 5.1 surround sound system. I have my eyes on THIS LG SYSTEM .

Can anyone tell me if its possible to hook up my PS3 to this so that I can have surround sound when playing games?

At a guess I'd have to run optical from the TV to the Surround sound unit?
or do I run a HDMI cable from PS3 to surround sound and then another HDMI cable from the unit to the TV?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Mark.

ermmmm

doesnt seem to have the digital audio in you would need to get full surround sound on your ps3.

although i maybe wrong.

i did see this on richersounds at 199 which is a very good price. you can wire up to your network in your house to stream music etc off your home pc.

anyway i cant see it has the digital in for 5.1 dolby.

you would be better with a surround sound amp mate. with hdmi switching. we install these on a lot of jobs. they are flexible and you can generally link all your sourceas too them. sound quality is way way superior also, but the downside is you then need to buy a set of speakers. with a reasonable budget (way under a grand) you will get a cracking amp and a speaker system with sub! u2u me with your budget and i will recommend a decent set up for you.

I bought a AV receiver, it accepts inputs from the TV, XBox, playstation, ipod, blueray player, and anything else I choose to plug into it. It automatically selects the HDMI source, and the sound quality is jaw dropping. It only cost £300, the best electrical I have ever bought.

Thanks guys

I don't really know what an AV receiver is. Is it just an amp? do they come with speakers?

My budget is topped out at £200. Having the PS3 work on surround sound really is a must for me, I'm not too bothered about the USB functions or the internet connectivity. Blueray is a big positive as the other half can't work a control pad on the Playstation.

The Playstation and my TV both have optical audio output so could I not just run one of these to the surround sound unit?

Many thanks

Mark,
I recently bought the LG HT805 5.1 surround system for the same reasons as you. It`s within your budget. If you`re lucky you can pick them up for bang on £200. You will need an optical cable to run between your TV and the amp unit. The cables are about £5 on Amazon. PS3 gaming in surround sound is great! Can`t wait for GT5, been on pre order since the summer but now delayed until Dec 17th

Full spec states the LG one does have digital optical in, so should be compatible with PS3.

I have a panasonic DVD surround which is just a basic 1 box system, sounds great, and only cost £190 which IMO was great value.

Dont worry about buying a full reciever system unless you are a proper music connoisseur.

It's not about being a music connoisseur, I don't use my amp to listen to music at all, it's about just getting good cinema sound and being a bit future proofed. IMHO save a bit longer and get seperates, if the blu-ray player breaks you've lost the whole system. I bought an Onkyo amp from Richer Sounds and it's superb, and was about £200 in the sale, you will need a speaker set, but again Richer Sounds have some great deals and you won't need to spend much more.
