Ouch!

Warning, do not drill into the palm of your hand with a new 10 mm drill bit, it hurts!

That'll slow the building down abit then!

'Tis bandaged now. It doesn't look that bad to be honest, I've managed to push back down all the skin. It just ripped it up, not off.
That doesn't stop it bloody hurting though! Just try moving your hand, and look at how the skin in the middle of your palm pulls tight

Thank god I'm married!

EDIT: Typing is crap with one hand.

at my old school bout 6 years ago my dt teacher performed the same trick (hand drilling)

i will never forget the strained smile he had as he left the room clutching his hand saying
"I've had a bit of an accident, another teacher will be with you shortly"

there was blood everywhere. I must have been horrible, and for you northy too.

i am sorry though it was really funny at the time,

I was told by my father-in-law (an ex-toolmaker) that the pillar drill is regarded as the machine most likely to cause accidents, together with the bench grinder.

All down to people treating them too casually, apparently, particularly by not clamping the work down. How many times have YOU held a bit of metal on the table and drilled a hole? (own-up time - I've done it quite a few times myself). Nothing like a drill jamming in small piece of hand-held stainless sheet to lacerate your fingers...

I was drilling a piece of flat for a rivet and using a portable drill. These must rate as the best tool for maiming yourself as you can do it without access to mains power. Too hurried to clamp it in anything I held it down with my thumb on a block of wood and started drilling. Next instant the piece of metal ran up the drill and I stood there with an 1/8" drill through my left pinky. Doctor said I was lucky as it went between tendon and bone but as it was still spinning when I pulled it out and some flesh came with it. I almost fainted when it was snipped off with scissors, there are a lot of nerves in fingers .

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

I managed to flatten a blokes finger once.... completely!

I was working on a helicopter in Bosnia...(here we go pull up a sand bag)

and was adjusting the hydraulic ram for the tail rotor controls. I didn't see this lad the other side of the aircraft putting his fingers in a VERY stupid place....

First i knew about it was when he said, quite calmly, Ow that hurts!

The top 15mm of his left index finger was squashed to about 0.5mm thick

yeuck

Jack Stock the wood work teacher at Thrapston School was showing the new intake how not to use the circular saw, and cleaned off his thumb

A Mechanic in a Garage in Bedford (Dave Frasier, mentioning no names) was grinding down the welding that he had done. Didn't spot the blood untill three-quarters of the way through his index finger and was spotted by his manager.

Hope your ok, the typing will get better.

Enjoy.

I believe 10mm is the mounting size for a Drill Safety Guard. If you mount this through the hand already drilled, it'll serve as a feature to prevent this happening again.
