LocostBuilders email

I talked a while back about the possibility of a 'group buy' on the Zimbra email (and other stuff) software and a server to run it on. I've been playing with the trial version and would really like to run it, but I just can't justify buying a license just for my own email.

Previous thread: http://locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=142435

So, in an effort to get the ball rolling, I wondered whether people would be interested in LocostBuilders email?

It would be based on Zimbra of course, so would have full integration with Outlook (via a connector module), mobile devices including push email, syncronisation between all devices and webmail, etc etc. It's basically the way that email should be.

I'd allocate @locostbuilders.co.uk email addresses, although I dare say we could look at people using their own domains if that was wanted.

Based on a share of a 25 mailbox system, including the server to run it on, we'd be looking about £60 per year per person. In my mind, just the proper integration of email into all your devices is worth that alone - it makes life so much easier when everything just syncronises without having to worry about it.

So, is anyone up for it?

If you're not bothered by calendaring, why the fixation on Outlook?

I'm not fixated with outlook, but it is a good solution for PC-based email. It's the sync to mobile and portable devices I find attractive - ie having the same inbox/outbox/sent items/contact list on PC, laptop, iPhone and iPad.

The price will come down if more people are up for it, but the license steps are quite steep at 25 users each and £390, so the 26th user will be expensive! The good thing is that the server cost should stay the same unless we scale to 100's of users, which is unlikely I suspect.

Sounds good - but how would that differ to my Google Account sync to my HTC Desire, the calendar, contacts, email, tasks documents are all synced all the time - and it's free and has never gone wrong. All my emails are web based with a notifier on Chrome and my home Desktop. I thought the days of PC based email clients were dwindling.

I manage that (laptops/desktops/mobiles/ipods) running Dovecot as an IMAP server and Squirrelmail for webmail on top. Postfix handles the SMTP part. I did run qmail for a while, but the config was tortuous. I can give you an account if you want to trial any devices you want if you like.

The IMAP solution doesn't do push though, does it? The client still has to poll the server.

As for Google, it'll be pretty much the same, but without adverts!

If the client supports it, the server will push new email. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAP_IDLE

Works for me with Apple Mail, Nokia N900, iPod, & Thunderbird.
