Which Scalextric?
Rather than hijack the thread going on by Nick regarding Kids, I've started a new one. Sorry, but it has a Christmas theme so if you are of a
nervous disposition around this time of year, please leave now.
Okay.
Granny has offered to buy my eldest a Scalextric and asked if I thought he would like it.
I replied YES YES YES YES YES YES YES (In the style of Meg Ryan. I never had one you see)
My question is which one?
I think the Caterfield one.
Opinions?

Great fun but the exhausts and roll bars get fooked. (I only have a daughter) The wife bought mine for my Xmas a few years back and I have a lot of
extra track that people have donated to me. I was working in one chaps roof space when I moved a whole box of tracks and barriers. I asked him what
he was going to do with it and he said the contents of the attic was all going to be picked up by the council up lift as soon as they cleaned it out
. He gave me the lot and I am slowly cleaning it.
I hav an idea for a fixed circuit that will fold down from the wall but have yet to construct the extention that its going in.
Scaleys is the most availble with other manufacures making some lovely cars.
There is even kits to build your own cars.

I was lucky enough to be given a Scalextrix when I was a nipper for Christmas. It was unwrapped at about 7am and I didn't get a go until nearly
lunchtime by which point 2 of the 3 cars were broken. My dad and godfather lost interest at this point and moved on to more serious things like booze
and lunch.
I think you'll enjoy it which ever one you get!

Forget scalextric, its shite, go for Ninco track and fly do probably the best cars, ninco track is a little wider which helps when you hang the back
out and is a better quality, the very latest scalexctric cars are much better than they used to be but fly have a better range (1000's) and are
excelent, especialy there racer series that have sticky tyres hot motors and lightweight bodies....

Scalextric is great, we had a huge double track (i.e. four cars at once) in our loft, spent literaly hours racing our mates.
Nitro RC cars are better though...

We had a massive track when i were a lad....
We started with the mini-cooper set and built on that. We even had a special hump back which you could get them to jump off - and if you were really
lucky they would land back on the track......!.

I think you'll find todays' kids are unimpressed by Scalextric 
They've got radio-controlled cars with diffs., irs, ifs, etc.
And Playstations.
Ungrateful little bleeders 
Of course, if you're intending to keep it for yourself 
Which reminds me of a joke:
Q. Why are tits like train sets?
A. They're meant to be for the kids but the dads want to play with them

Well,
I have a Scalextric it's now into it's 25th year and still gets a couple of outings a year. I regularly buy the cars and agree the Fly and
Ninco one's are better quality and faster.
My children given the choice prefer the Scalextric to any of their toys. PS2 etc etc I have loads of cars and have recently bought the 7 type cars
which are excellent, the Karts (Ninco) are brilliant fun! As a McLaren Fan I also have the Mikka and David F1 Cars. The mini's are dated, the
Rover SD1 and Capri are too... the Ninco Toyota Coralla 4x4 and Scooby 4x4 are awesome!
My children know it is valuable and treat is as such with great respect... after all, when I'm gone they can fight over it then...

I've never heard of the Ninco stuff, is it better? I really fancy setting up a track again. Or a garden railway!

The cars are deffo better - of late Scalextric have improved lots... but still not up to Ninco or Fly.
Tell you what - sad as it seems I'll take a few pic's and put them into my archive....

When I was young my Dad worked abroad and the Xmas shopping was down to my mum. Consequently I ended up with a battery powered 6v system
(scalextrix-esque). Anyway, as you can imagine, it was bobbins.
However, my pal has the real Macoy, a MAHUSSIVE track, the length and breadth of his parents HUGE caravan.
What a discovery to find that 6V cars go VERY fast on a 12V system...
(for a while).
What happened to Total Control Racing (TCR)?
Or that 'Race and Chase' (goodies and baddies U-turning thing?
Hope you had a laugh at my expense with the 6v / 12v idea.
Around the same age I managed to get a nice 240v belt from my train-set too.
Funny how I ended up in a very electrical job.

I wired my train set to the mains as well,the engine just sat there vibrating and smoking, not for long though.

The Ninco and Fly cars are interchangeable with Scalextric Track.

For kids of an excitable nature, I'd recommend the Crash Bash version - the cars in these are quite robust.
Plus you can have good fun chasing the cat round the rooom once the nipper's in bed

PS. I had the Race and Chase one from Matchbox. That was absolutely fantastic. So much so that I asked my Dad to show me a hand brake turn for
real (In a private car park back in 81 of course!!)

I bought a load of scalextric for my two sons a few years ago. They didn't seem to be as impressed with it as I used to. They seem to have a
more sofisticated expectation of toys nowadays.
I blame the internet and computer games personally !
