Charity ??
I know, it's a bad word but please listen up anyway. Hope I don't open up a whole can of worms here, but anyway - here goes....
On another se7en chat board - let's call it blatchat for want of a better word, they have adopted the Leukemia Research Fund as their chosen
charity. Nuke The Leuk they call it. Basically, members offer to fund raise or sell off their junk / cheap spares / services, and instead of the
funds going to the vendor, they go to the charity.
This has to be better than a whip round.
Does anyone think that would be appropriate in here, if we were to maybe discuss the possibility of doing similar.
Please feel free to discuss your choice of beneficiary for such a thing. My own personal would be for a cancer research type charity - it bites us all
or our family or our friends eventually.
What do you think ?
Over to you.

If I want to donate to charity I'll donate to charity. I see no reason why this forum needs to pick one.

i think there is a lot in the saying 'charity begines at home' but not as its normally meant.
People, I feel, tend to raise money for charities that 'are closer to home' - ie, they know someone, or have someone, in theri family that
has an affliction and go out to campaign for it.
Some dont. I have an autistic son, and we have never been in the campaigning mode.
Some causes will have less 'givers' than others.
(Isnt Leukemia a disease thats got a pretty high cure rate now? I can remember visiting a hospital as a 10 year old, and being told I was passing a
room of a child with Leukemia. It was said in hushed tones cos it was a death senance then.)
I tend to give to any deserving charity waving a tin at me, and some of the disaster appeals on tv.
I dont give to those assholes on the street asking for credit card info!
as far as your idea , if the site had some kinda collection, id put in. However trying to organise something across such a diverse range of
geographically arranged people wouldnt be easy!
it might be interesting to put something you no longer need on ebay, and donate the proceeds from that. Sometimes things go for a lot more than you
would expect. (and unfortunatlely sometimes the reverse!)

Autism
Steve I have a son with Autistic Spectrum Disorder AKA Asberger's Syndrome. A mild form of autism. He once told us we would have more money if
we would quit taking him to all those doctors. My wife and I had a good laugh over that.

If people wish to donate to charity they will in whatever way suits their circumstances.
In the other forum they obviously have more available cash and so that suits them.
In this one where people are often building on a very tight budget I don't think it would be appropriate.
I get very annoyed when it feels like I am being pressurised into donating cash I don't have, by the likes of all those collectors knocking at
the door. And those yearly/monthly appeals where you cannot get away from in the street that work in gangs. One gang 10yards behind the other.
We give a great deal to charity, not in cash, but by donating stuff we no longer need.
It was a fair point to bring to discusion though!

it does put it into context a bit tho when the people on this site are likely to spend in excess of 2,500 quid on a vehicle purely for pleasure
purposes, and 80 odd percent think a few quid to charity is a bad idea..........
not getting at the spyder at all but

CHarity begins at home - well, metaphorically speaking. Not giving to charity exactly, but I know Chris makes no money from the running of this site
and he provides the hosting, maintenance and bandwidth for it to be able to exist. Perhaps (though not labelling chris as a charity!) we should have
donations to help with the upkeep of the site as opposed to giving to an external charity organisation.
I may have gotten it comletely wrong or out of context, but just my 2p..
Ned.

I don't have a problem with charity and anyone can give whatever they want however they want - indeed I do give money to what I think are good
causes from time to time.
I'm not sure I would want to turn this fine forum into a fundraising vehicle for any particular charity.
I can appreciate Ned's comment about the upkeep of this site, as I am sure there are a lot of builders out there who have benefited greatly from
access to the knowledge available here - if Chris feels he needs support that is.
Cheers
Mark
