Plasma cutter capacity vs amps
The insurance company said they're mailing a check today and one of the things stolen I need to replace is my plasma cutter.
I had one of these:
Firepower (12amp), $549 (on sale), cuts 1/8" steel, so that's what their check will cover.
I'm tempted to add $395 of my own bucks, though, and getting one of these:
Hobart 250A (12amp), $939, cuts 1/4" steel
My only reservation is that they're both 12amp (110v) units. Can the Hobart really cut through twice as much steel without using any more power?
Makes me suspicious, like horsepower ratings on air compressors . . . .

surely it will be based on a transformer, so the same input supply can be used and based on turns of wire in the transformer, a varied out put can be
given.
chances are, the higher powered one runs at much lower out put voltage, allowing the output current to be higher, as with a welder

Hobart is a good brand, I have run a whole 10 kg roll through my Mig welder without a single hitch
