Everyday Car

Took my exhaust of the Cavalier over the weekend to weld up a split. When I put it back on it was blowing at the joint between the manifold and the down pipe, but had no choice other than to use it as I had to get to work today.

When I first got in it last night the orange engine management light came on a few times, but gave up when the car reached normal operating temp. The same thing happened tonight on the way back from work.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to what might be causing it?

Does it have a catalytic converter?

If so then the Lamba sensor that measures oxygen (I think) in the exhaust is probably misreading because of the leak, this would cause an error with the engine management system, which might not be able to adjust the fuel/air/advance to compensate.

That's my guess!

Im not an expert but maybe its causing a false lambda sensor reading, as its located near the manifold, and therefore you might be getting the warning light during startup because the ecu has up-ed the fueling for cold starting and its running richer than normal.

Didn't come on beforehand, but the split was after the sensor, now it's before it.
