I purchased one for my parents the other day.

£120 for a DVD-Recorder seemed a very reasonable offer...

It's got everthing you need including RGB / Optical outputs.

No scart but gives you a free DVD-RW to get you started.

Seems ok so far.....

Very easy to set up apart from the fact that I can't seem to get it to recognise a freeview box at the moment....

Hopefully, I'll be able to fix this problem when I'm next at my parents.

As far as the brand goes, if it breaks after the guarantee runs out, it was so cheap that you could almost chuck it away !!!!

Yes the name does put me off but I'm not sure if it should ,lots of these things are the same under the skin, (liteon, grundig, goodmans etc.)

Also I know people who have the Phillips one and have had plenty of problems.

Slightly off track...I've got a Barclays account and they give me a free 3 year warranty on most electrical items over £25 if you pay with debit/barclaycard. I've bought the kids £30 DVD players and they are the same as the £50 Panasonic I got with my TV. The good thing though is that if it breaks down in the next 3 years I get the money back as I suspect not worth fixing. As said there can only be a few large factories churning out this stuff with different cases and labels on.

I thought Barclaycard had finished that insurance/Gtee thing Zetec.
As for the Matsui only thing that would put me off is lack of Scart outlet so what you win in DVD quality you lose thru the tuner so it seems a bit pointless.
Probably why its so cheap they dropped a goolie over the european spec at the facory and didnt fit one.
Cheers,
Bob

Few years ago I bought a cheap setup of:

Sherwood amp (Richer Sounds own brand IIRC)
Warfedale widescreen (28"?) TV and DVD player (both from Tescos).
Total cost around £500.

All works fine, picture is good. Sound is great.

Two months ago my mate spent ~£2500 on Sony TV, amp, DVD.
The picture is average but the sound has so much lip synch error it's almost impossible to watch!
The cases look better though!

Atb,
James

I had Matsui portable tv for years and one of their radio cassette before that when they were using the name Prinz. They both died of old age after reaching double figures with no problems.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

In that case bend yer plastic mate its a winner.
Brand names in consumer electronics mean absolutely zippo nowadays.
We used to buy a music on hold CD player for £140 + VAT trade ,till we found the supplier was buying the player off of Richer Sounds (accoustic solutions) and putting thier name on em.....price from Richer Sounds retail £29.99.

Yer pays yer money.
Cheers,
Bob

As with most things - there are only a few major manufacturer's in the world that can maximise output and therefore chop pricing. This kills or consumes all the small players. It's a very cut-throat business in outomotive and electrical.

The company I work for only mark up 20% of their home branded product as there own... go figure!

I would a good word in for richer sounds hear they offer good advice the prices are very competitive and as long as you are awhere that they own Cambridge audio (and hence tend to push there stuff a bit all though there stuff is reasonably good) at leas worth a look and they have a website as well. Although the some specials are only advertised in store.

I have a cambridge amp in my office from Richer sounds and it's fantastic. I don't think they are their own brand however. I have seen Cambridhe all over the place.

Dave

The Cambridge Audio brand is owned by " The Audio Partnership", who also own most of the names that Richer Sounds stocks; Mordaunt Short, Gale, Ariston, TDL to name a few.

I used to work for Dixons / Currys as a repair engineer (13 years experience). Matsui is their own brand, but most of it is made by Goodmans or Grundig. I wouldn't hesitate in buying this stuff - all seemed very reliable. It seemed the less moving parts, the better. TVs more reliable than VCRs, cd / DVD more than anything with a cassette in!!
