neighbourly tiffs

I was using an angle grinder to grind of my landys rear cross member at about 2pm today, (sunday of bank holiday weekend) when my neighbour arrived home. She parked her car on her drive and went inside. abou 20m later she came out and started moaning that some sparks wear 'hitting' her car!

I don't thnk so, her drive is longer than mine and she had parked further up hers about 10ft away. (i think most the spark have ended up in my hair!).

Then she started banging on about having guests arriving soon-ok ask me politly to be quiet, WHEN they arrive.

Then she went on about how its a residential area and i shouldn't be doing it and should show consideration, but then perhaps i should do it by my front door and not hers- I live in a culdesac corner, so my drive is adjacent to hers, at the back of my property but adjacent to her front door. Hell theres a field at the end of the road!

after that rant she went on about how she didn't like my land rover any way and didn't like looking at it when she came out the front door. (her front door is at the side cant really see landy from her front windows) bloody cheek - first 6 months of living here, her son had a scaffolding lorry parked on the PAVEMENT (lots of dents there now) and her bloke had an old battered astra van. Both have got rid of now, to be replaced by a proton 'starbucks' light pickup and a great big double cab ford ranger pickup, complete with big trailler.

I thought abou it then about 2 min later a merc pulled up on the drive next to where i was working so i found something else to do

I got my replacement rear cross member which is second hand went into my garage (opposite her kitchen) open the window closed the door (so didn't get the merc) and put a sanding wheel on my grinder and st to cleaning up my replacement.

once that was done, i then mowed the lawn, not quite as noisy but not quiet either

hunger got the better of me so i came back indoors

would like to have stayed outside, but am renting the property and don't want to be evicted. on the plus side the landlord is into vintage tractors, and his on is a landy nut-he has a lightweight and a 101!

Looking to be a first time buyer soon though

Anyone else have neighborly tiffs, and what do you do to avoid them?

my elderly ex neighbour once complained about me running a business from a residential address - i pointed out it was a hobby and she was most puzzled!

its always grinding that pisses the neighbours off. obviously they've never had junkies for neighbours, playing crap music ALL weekend - that puts it all in perspective, believe me!

I currently live in a cottage in the country(sort of, but beside a pretty busy road) and I only have one neighbour and their not too close...thankfully they've never moaned.
I can fully understand how annoying it must be for you and your neighbour ( my neighbour has a few very yappy dogs that do my box in when I'm being quiet ) I suppose it's a balance really...but pigging frustrating when you want to something done and they winge.....

Anyway.... I made the mistake of renting this place 4 years ago and have missed the house price boom.... today landylordy appears and says he wants to get the place valued......so it looks like I'm gonna have to either move or raise a chunk of dosh to buy an overpriced house.......

So The Indy might be for sale soon........

anyone wanna buy about 20 engines..... or 20 people wanna buy 1 ????????

moral of the story......if you like it there try and be reasonable and invent quiet grinding discs

I've been infrequently working from my dads garage and get the same sh1t from one of his neighbours, the gent on the other side loves it and often asks questions and offers suggestions. The haggard shrew on the other hand has accused me of illegal car repairs, building and selling go-karts and even complains about me parking my car on the drive when I visit. She's rude, hypocritical and quite rightly disliked. I usually don't like to be nasty but I certainly don't wish her a long and peaceful life. I just ignore her now.

A bit of slapstick never hurt anyone.

disputes with Neibiours are always bad and in the end NO ONE wins I live in a rural circumstance and my neibiours are 300 m away and they have on ocassin complained about my dogs barking (it was not even my dogs that were the culprits) Find out what you are allowed to do acording to your local ordenances try to consider your neibiours if you can and stick to your rights if you have to . Above allTextBe polite and pleasant at all times even when you know that they are being total wankers .Because when push comes to shove If they make a compaint to any one it will be benificial to you if you can demonstrate what a nice guy you are .

I have one neighbour that has a habit of dumping his hedge trimmings in our hedge bottom. The one time I had about half a ton of wet concrete going spare. I can't deny the idea of dumping it all in his hedge bottom didn't cross my mind.

The best bet with trouble some neighbours is to ignore them, sooner or late having got no respons out of you the disapear to direct thier frustration at someone/something else.

Well did some more grinding today 2pm to 4pm, even moved my car to the end of the drive and put a makeshift screen up!

The bag came out and started demanding me tell her when i would finish. saying how inconsiderate i am. saying she works all week and needs the weekends and evenings at home to be peacefull, and how its a residential area.

I said i work during the week too

Seems i can only make any noise when she is not there- how considerate of her!

then she went on about how i was poorly bred i was etc, and said she would report me to Environmental Health and the estate agent we let through.

Carried on grinding till my disc weared down.

btw my boss anounced on friday he is selling up-means i may lose job and therefore company car, therefore need alternative transport!

We have one muppet that calls the police out telling them I was rideing an unlicenced quad in the street! Bit difficult when the quad had no wheels and no handlebars on.

Polis came round and talked about the car for half an hour. Then went and old them off for wasteing traffic officers time.

The get up everybods nose its just a fact of life that these persons exist.

Macspeedys car really does there head in.....they just look and growl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wait to the bec gets started.

I think she is being reasonable.

I have used grinders a lot, but have tried to do work indoors.

imagine if you were not a car fanatic, and your next door neighbour had 2 teenage kids doing up an old car with a 9 ins angle grinder going for several hrs a day on a bank holiday.

I think a court would find you in the wrong, as the judge might tend to think that roadside repairs using noisy industrial equipment insnt right in a residential st.

Ive made noise with grinders before, but always indoors and at sensible times. Ive never had problems with neighbourts with noise as i try and see things from their viewpoint.

If she sat in the garden with a sex pistols album on at full blast, that may be her thing, not yours. You need to see things from both sides.

I see what your saying, which is why i don't do it in the mornngs, or in the evenings, given the fact i work weekdays, and i might actually leave my house with my wife at the weekends, means I only have a couple of hours of (inconsistant) use 1 day a month is all she hears.

btw. it was still on my private driveway, and had my garage been big enough then i would put the landy inside. It was also a £20 415mm grinder from halfords

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

its probably too late now as the damage has been done but if you have to do some grinding in the future it would be probs best to fore warn her so she knows first. Problem now is that she wont want to back down.
im extremely lucky where i live. Its a quiet cul-de-sac but everyone gets on really well. I go out of my way to be a polite considerate neighbour but still get on with the work. Having a big garage helps as i have plenty of space to get on with the car with doors closed - keeps noise down. Im wary about working late when the jobs are noisy.

Try being pleasant and polite. This will do one of 2 things. Either let her see you are not as bad as she first thought or secondly she will get bored with it and direct attention to someone else.

Stephen has a point but if you have to do the jobs try explaining it first. I dont suppose you have to fit many cross members outside! Its probably just a one off.

If she's single she may fancy you. Maybe its been a while since she had a bit! lol

Yup well it'll be a one off!

Phoned my landlord up and asked him his view. I also asked him wheth he would mind if i parked my landy on the big patch of grass i have to mow, so it was further away from her. he said off the record that he didn't mind at all

hes also coming round this sat to colllect my grass cuttings
