Pets

I was never really an animal person.
About 8 years ago, my wife said that she had always wanted one, so not having an opinion I didn't really care one way or another. We got one from a rescue centre and it has been with us for the last eight years through 2 house moves and a baby arriving. It has really become part of the family - fond of us, and us of it.

Anyway - tonight, a knock on the door brought the bad news that as of tonight it is no longer with us. Hit by a car and that's that. Gone. We still haven't told our 3 year old that she won't be coming back.

As I said at the start, I was never really an animal person, but they do get under your skin and become part of your life.

You'll notice I didn't say what kind of animal it was - it doesn't really matter I suppose whether you're a dog or a cat person. Losing a pet is still the same either way.

Anyway - just wanted to get all wishy washy and share that.

Pets........

Yeah , sorry to hear that it's a gut wrencher even for us big macho blokes.......

I lost my cat over Christmas week ,after 17years, It was very tough , but i was surprised how simpathetic people were ,which was good.

I just tried to remember that she had had a good life in my home and I had treated her well, which would no doubt have been the same in your case .

It's a painful time , but remember the pleasure you've had in the last 8 years.

All the best..........

My sympathies to you, they become part of you. A cat person myself as I dont have the time to give a dog all the attention they require. Last year was bad, Lost my Dad in the spring and 2 of my cats in the late summer they were 11 and 13 years old - older than my kids. Breaking it to them is hard. Life goes on and the car building was / is a great distraction. Good luck with the child.

Thanks
Dale

I have never had any pets, other than goldfish, because, being at bording school, I wouldn't have time to look after them.

Just remember the good times

Losing family and friends is always going to be hard and a pet is family and friend.

it's not a consolation by any means but the loss of a pet to any child is going to be hard but IMHO I think it's all part of the learning experience. It helps prepare them for the loss of a realtive or friend sometime later in life. Doesn't make it any easier on you or on the child though.

Feels empty now and it hurts don't it. It does get better though.

Dog person here, 10 month old black lab at my feet. Had the knock on the door, sorry to tell you.......... 5 years ago, so appreciate where you are.

Sorry to hear this mate.
Lost my dog two years ago after 13 years and I still consider her to be the best friend (besides my wife) i ever had.Not much left of the big macho behaviour when the vet gave her the final shot!Cried like a bloody child!
We now have another dog and aldo you have the tendency to compare in the beginning,it really helps to get over the loss.
