how many sandwiches

Seeing what a hornets nest the Monty Hall door problem was, here is another contentious one.

Very simple question.

You buy a pack of ready made sandwiches. The type thats two bits of bread, cut in half, and put into one of those triangular plastic packs.

How many sandwitches are there?

Is there one, being a whole sandwich, cut into two.

OR

are there two sandwitches?

this innocent question usually causes a bit of controversy.

I voted two, based on the following:

If you go to a family wedding and there is a buffet with those sandwiches where the slice is cut into four triangles, then loading your plate with 36 of them (to soak up the beer) usually attracts comments such as "fat bloater." Of course your parents/kids would not be quite so abusive if they believed there were only 9 sandwiches.

On the other hand if you have four slices of wedding cake (aunty usually gets the hump if you ask for a fifth) you are not considered to have had four wedding cakes.

So now I'm not so sure. It's a real dilemma.

I'm gonna sleep on it.

Strangely that's what the best man said about the bride!

The sandwich is made then cut into 2 halves. It is 1 sandwich.

Let this be the end of the madness before it begins, and as for the car question, it's 50:50

Are we, for that matter, sure that a sandwish is made then cut into two?

Could they not have been using triangular bread????

If I was at my house and someone asked me to make a sandwich, if I brought through a triangular half sandwich you'd probably hear 'what the f*ck is that man!!'

one sandwich

and the car thingy is 2/3!!

1. the question was worded neutrally - you shouldnt infer that im saying its one or two.

2. Viper - no, not at night when its cold outside and especially not at work at present.

3. This is an interesting question, as although to an individual it seems stupid cos its obvious, we have at the point of writing 6 votes to 5. So it cant be that obvious and trivial, can it?

4. Im a bit suprised at the ratio - it usually goes 30:70 one way.

technically, it might be less ambiguous to say 'a sample of sandwichi'... then its neither singular or plural, nor one or two.

an apple cut in two doesnt become 2 apples, and a wedding cake cut in half doesnt become 2. but apples and cakes are in units. if the cake mix was cut in two before baking, it would be two cakes. Plus, a sandwich is itself two pieces of bread. if the two pieces were each folded separately in to two triangular sandwiches, it would also be two. so the bread comes into it somewhere....

luckily, its irrelevant, leave it to the psycologists um?!

But what about the packs where you get three of the said triangular shaped items, all with a different filling?

Whats that all about then?

Definition...

Sandwich: two or more slices of bread etc. with meat or other relish between.

Note the term SLICE of bread.

If a packet came comprising a total of two slices, no matter how they are cut, it cannot be more than ONE sandwich

I believe at least one of the triangular shaped objects has Billy Goats cheese as its filling

Who would like to chow down on that?

egg - chicken
chicken - egg

Think it's 1.5 sandwiches, as there is slightly more than one sandwich, but not quite two. unless you go for one of those trucker's sandwiches you find in the motorway service station's in which case it could be three?? Where did the third one come from? and is there another lonely sandwich on its own out there?
