Safe disposal of kitchen implements...

No, not a joke...!

I bought a new set of kitchen knives yesterday for the house, as our old ones were shabby and in a pretty dangerous state. Getting hold of some new ones was easy, but does anyone know the safest way to dispose of the old ones, to avoid them getting into the hands of the local scallies...?

Or am I being a bit precious?

Thanks in advance - Francis.

Stick them in the local scallies?

I'd just wrap the blades in a few good layers of thick card, tape them up well, and bin them, or lob them in the metals recycling at the local dump.

Possibly worth pestering the police, but I'd bet they want nothing to do with it.

Strange as it sounds I found a brand spanking new, still in their wrappers, set of kitchen knives in the wheely bin last years, concerningly there was 1 missing!

Spoke to plod about it with very limited success as I remember it took some serious arm twisting to get him to take them away!

so about 25p for a 300mm carving knife. Maybe you'll get £1.00 for a whole set

My friend asked me the same thing as he'd been given a new set and his old ones were "knackered".

I had a look at the old ones... they were better than mine! So I took them off him. Got given a knife sharpener for Christmas and did the biz with it.... brilliant! New set of knives for free! lol!

What a pikey!

Cheers,
James

I would just bit them, wrap in card, bottom of wheely. Done.

If you want to diskcutter them into a few bits it would make them useless but i i where a scally looking for a i know i would be targeting wikcos armed with 50p rather than rummaging in randomers dust bins in the hope i would happen on somthing!

Our Police station has a secure bin outside for disposing knives.

I'd stick them in a vice and grind 'em blunt with an angle grinder then stick 'em in the wheel bin....

Thanks for your replies. I knew you'd have some ideas.

Askpolice's site also advised wrapping the blades in cardboard and binning them, but I wasn't sure if there was a better way. I tend to chop up old craft & stanley-knife blades with some old tin-snips anyway, to render them harmless.

Hope I didn't wind you up, Steve!

I'll check with our local recycling centre and neuter, pad & bin the knives if they don't have a better way.

Thanks all - F.
