Download = 0.60 mb/s

Are these decent figures (sorry not computer-minded)?

I can answer my own question (Googled it)... the average UK speed is 3.6mb/s

How do I improve this (would the wireless-router being in another room be part of the problem)?

im 1.95 down,

ways to improve it are by having a wired link, or being close to router if wireless, changing your service provider and moving into the centre of a city (distance from and number of users on the "exchange" are key factors)

Download = 6.70 mb/s
Upload = 0.38mb/s

which implys yours if broadband is very slow (unless you ment 6.0 not 0.6?)

Nope... 0.6

Off to get an ethernet cable and plug-in to see if that improves things!

I'm with Be Unlimited and due to the distance I am from the exchange I'm limited to 11mbps down and 1.1 mbps up. That's on their 24mbps option.

If I had standard 8mbps then I would expect around 5 mbps down and 0.5 mbps up with a decent connection at least.

Scootz run this LINKY and plug your modem into the master socket closest to where it comes into your property
Then take the other phones off the line.
Run the speedtest then put the phones back one at a time. rerunning test each time.
This may id whats causing slow speeds

There are alot of things that can make your speed slow/fast.

number of users the contention ratio is 50/1 so thats up to 50 people using the same connection to the internet as you.

now if all of them are heavy internet users you will suffer too.

distance from the exchange. if you are to far away you wont get a good service at all.

here is a link to the BT postcode speed check. Just type in your postcode and get the speed you can expect at max.

http://www.btbroadbandinformation.com/bt-postcode-checker/

this is only a guide as for my postcode it says 4.5Meg but I can only get 3.5Meg max.

Also try rebooting your router this can help some times.

If it helps any... When I was with BT Total BB I was forever on the phone trying to get them to sort out why the speed was so slow. They always blamed my equipment or my internal phone wiring. They didn't believe I was plugged into the master socket.
I sacked them off in the end and went to Virgin. Anytime I check the speed now I'm getting what I'm paying for.

Moral of the story, sack off BT and go elswhere.

BT control nearly everything via land line so swapping provider wont help in most situations. Hull is a different story because of Crapkom but for the most the only way to speed up is fibre.
