which phone to replace trusty V3?

Was using a Motorolla V3 and was very happy with it

All I use it for is making and receiving calls and the occasional text (not photos and multimedia efforts, just text)

It has to have bluetooth and must have a setting so it "auto answers the phone" when connected via bluetooth like on my old V3 that is now broken

Just got a cheapo VM621i (rebadged Alacatel from what I can gather?) from Argos and it is advertised as having bluetooth, was cheap as a cheap thing and have been playing with it and all is looking great and willing to live with having to use the phone lock thingy so I don't constantly ring people from my pocket as its not a flip phone protecting the keypad

managed to pair it up to my iPod's Gear4 Blueye after a bit of fumbling in the menus (usually worn with in ear headphones under helmet on bike and kit car so I can use the phone via bluetooth and mute the music)

Impressed with the speed the menus work etc, I guess the V3 is pretty dated now, decided to test the bluetooth...
OMG!, stupid thing does not auto answer and having spent the better part of 2 hours trying to find a menu to allow it to do this ...I think I have discovered it doesn't have one and theres no way of getting it to work fully hands free

I spoke to Virgin and was passed pillar to post, told my number has not been in use for several years...told I need to upgrade my phone (thats only a few hours old!) then finally told the phone does not have this feature and to take it back to Argos
(and at the time of purchase was told is exempt from the 30 day return policy, so looks like I have lost my £19 on a lemon)

This lack of feature renders the bluetooth handsfree feature completely useless as it would involve fumbling for phone and pressing the answer button...which just simply is not going to happen whilst wearing gloves and riding or driving at the time!

Surely this is not "bluetooth handsfree" if it requires finding the phone and having to push a button for each incoming call?
(I'm certainly going to argue the toss with Argos as it cannot be used handsfree as far as I can tell)

Was this a "special feature" of the old Motorolla V3 that I am unlikely to find on a modern but cheap phone?

I cannot live without it

what other phones should I be looking at?
I have a few cameras and MP3 players so those features are not needed on the phone

It only has to be able to answer calls when hooked up to bluetooth and in my pocket
A flip phone would be preferred, but it seems they are way out of fasion these days

Help!

Rob

true, and is looking like what I will do if theres not a suitlable modern replacement

theres one on there now, buy it now and under a mile away, double the price I just threw down Argos's drain but the guy won't let me collect in person and insists on posting it...which puts me off the deal somewhat

I did replace the keypad a few years ago as it no longer lit up and was being a pain

Looks like the keypad has completely gone kaput now as none of the keys are working 100% and when a key does work it will 9 times out of 10 get stuck down
It does light up though ...LOL

I could probably replace the membrane again, but will involve further delays/cost and hassle....assuming its not something more sinister as the phone is getting pretty old now and has seen some abuse (inc angle grinding dust when I opened it up to check the ribbon connector hadn't just popped off causing the fault)

The V3's I can afford on eBay will also be pretty old as well (and possibly at the end of their lifes) and I was just wondering if theres something more modern which will suit my basic needs and I could pick up tomorrow or Saturday

Open to suggestions

Rob

Nokia 2720

looks like it will do what you want

CPW

At least you can go into CPW and ask/try what you want it to do. The Nokia website says it does auto call pick up but I would double check before you pay for it.

Any Sony Erricsson (preferable if you like using it as a walkman as well), any Nokia, any other, really. If you want ease of use and aren't worried about having a die-hard portable laptop, avoid any Windows-based mobile, if you like some useful features, lots of gimmiky apps and are a sheep, get an iphone.

Really depends on your budget - sounds like you picked the low-end-of-budget phone and got burned. Don't give up on that - that would be like buying a new Chevrolet Matiz and from that deciding that no modern car will fit the bill...

I know what you mean I had a Sagem My500c and was very happy with it but it got mashed. I bought a Samsung S3100 and really could not feel 100% at home with it.

In the end I managed to find an "end of line" Sagem My300 on the net.
If you look around the net you will still find a few end of line Motorola V3's around -- unlocked for any network.

I have a Nokia 3110, well two in fact. One is my work mobile, no camera but mine has.

Anyway it makes calls, sends texts, battery lasts ages and when I jump in the car connects to the bluetooth no problem. Plays music, has a radio and mp3 ringtones and a loud dixyhorn text alert, really pisses the boss off

£10 a month contract from Tesco with 400 minutes or texts..

Does me, don't need anything else, in fact don't need 2 but the other one is a Nissan concern hotline but not for much longer

I actually really quite like the new one I got, but just lacks the auto answer feature...if it had that I would be delighted with it
I can see the screen will not live long though, its already knackered the screen protector with a single day at the scrap yard

I may just live without the auto feature and see if it kills me whilst I take a punt on replacng the the V3's keypad as it turns out pressing wither of the cars bluetooth buttons (one on the radio and one on a doohickey on the dash) does make it pick up and end the call - tested it a couple of times today
..we have to have 2 blueteeth doodahs in the tintop as me and the mrs share it and it was just easier to be able to allow both phones to work rather than just the fastest to make the connection...lol

It appears that most of the big modern phones (based on typing 'bluetooth auto answer' into google) lack the auto answer feature, which is a MASSIVE backwards leap to me
iPhone, blackberry, viewty are just a few of the ones I wasn't expecting to be lacking such a basic (and possibly driving licence saving) feature and am struggling to see why they bother putting bluetooth on without this feature?

Have seen the new V3i's on eBay as well, but worried they will be Chinese copies and not have the feature I want in a language I understand....LOL

Does the Nokia 3110 answer the phone without having to push a button when hooked up to bluetooth?
Had a look at the manual and it suggests it does
