Nissan Pulsar - blown engine
Friend of mine's boy bought one of these (three weeks ago) and it's gone pop.
Lost a bit of water a few weeks ago, which was topped up. Then last week (presumably during a bit of a blat) it started running rough (two cylinders),
temp up, lost water etc. I'm guessing h/gasket's gone. Any other thoughts.
He's been quoted £2k to fix. Apparently needs engine removing, then inspection maybe pistons skim/head gasket etc.
Anyone had experience of these things?

Sounds very much like HGF. £2k sounds very excessive though, you could fully rebuild it with forged pistons for that kind of money. There's
nothing particularly complicated about them though, worth taking the head off and having a look yourself.
The pulsars are great fun when they are working, but sadly not the most reliable of vehicles. The transmision has a repuation for being made from
chocolate, and whilst capable of huge power, the SR20DET engine can suffer from big end failures.

i remember a lad bought a punto turbo and was mightily impressed with it until he found out that the pipe from the compressor housing was supposed to
be connected to the wastegate
buying an old turbo car is like meeting a girl whos just spent the night in a hotel suite full of footballers,
unlikely that she wont be f***ed

pulsar turbos are very expensive to maintain mate
I wouldnt expect anyone would work on the engine for less than£1k
log on to the pulsar gtir forum even though perhaps not a member just do a few searches
he might be able to bring the price down a bit but I wouldnt bank on it

Something I see quite a lot at Mech Repairs the garage I use in Cheltenham.
I was there fixing one of their diags machines today and there was a tidy Cossie on the rollers.
Unfortunately the owner had bought it and within a week the engine blew costing £3K to fix. Too much boost and injectors too small, very common
story.
Another Cossie I see in there regularly the owner keeps buying stuff off eBay including one completely shagged engine and two duff gearboxes so far!
