Thanks for all the replies. It seems that everyone has their own take on the situation.

I am probably going to go on the holiday. I have just had the dates signed of by the Managing Director. I explained the situation to him and he said just take it off.

There is some truth behind the situation where you have to make yourself pretty invaluable in business these days. The minute people can cope without you is the minute your not needed. Knowledge is power and you have to make sure you have the knowledge.

I do have a new assistant actually but she has been here just a couple of months. She has already asked for a payrise!!! To which my response was 'your still learning the job and consequently not being much use. When you are up to speed then you might make the company money, but now you are actually costing us money'. She replied with 'but I have been working flat out learning the processes and other work related items'. I said 'You may have been flat out but your still costing us cash. Work hard, learn fast, be enthusiasic and most importantly make yourself invaluable to the business, then ask me again for a payrise.'

The right work ethics are the key to success in business I think. The day I stop having 'moral work dilemmas' is the day I become less valuable to the business.

subconsciouosly maybe you are concerned that someone can do the job as well or better than you?

I am not at all concerned that someone can do my job better than me. This may seem a colossal arrogance on my part but if there was someone I would work harder and be better. If you turn your mind to something then you can achieve anything.

hehe Perhaps even build a Kit Car with zero prior knowledge.

last year i came back from holiday early due to work. Left the wife and kid on holiday with her parents. They just accepted that, sometimes, you dont turn work down.

Absolute Crap. Ive worked for good bosses, and bad bosses. I used to work equally as hard and put some rediculous hours in, only to get told "Theres no budget for training this year" and "sorry, but no one is getting a pay rise this year". Ive Heard all the corporate excuses before, and been laid off twice. The only time working flat out benefits YOU is when you work for yourself - in which case Joel, youre correct.

I also hate the phrase "Knowledge is power". It isnt. The "Firm" will always try to find someone else or some other way that is cheaper to get that knowledge. Just because they smile at you doesnt mean youre not on the hit list for the head count slash next month.

Been here too many times before, and it seems the less you do, the further you get im afraid.

Kindest Regards,
Richard.

I can see where you're coming from, but i would mention that the lad i employ is bloody good at fitting kitchens, but cannot do worktop joins or electrics, so he effectively cannot set up on his own. So there is an element at least of knowledge giving you an advantage.

Also, though i might not always be able to reward or punish good or bad employees, i do certainly know very well each of their good and bad points, and when it comes round to redundancies, i have a whole list of unofficial reasons to help my decision - even if i couldnt mention them to the employees as it might appear unfair if it went to a tribunal.

I think you need to read what he said more carefully- he said "If you work for a GOOD company"

I'm sorry to hear about the crap places you've worked, I've worked in plenty of those, but I've also worked in good firms, and in those the extra effort does get noticed, and rewarded. It's just one of the things that makes the difference between a good firm and the more usual type

But the current economic climate isn't really the best time to remind your employers of that

What economic climate

The one where firms are skint ( but busier than ever)
Where you never do enough ( even if you have for 25 plus years)
Where you work harder and longer hours
Where you can get paid time/half or double time but the firm cannot give you a payrise (WTF is that about)

SO TAKE your holidays with your familly ( I used to be like you). NOT ANYMORE

If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.
