25*C and sunny here in Auckland (Except it's night time). I'm sort of not looking forward to going home later this month. 7-8 hours of dim daylight and overcast, moist weather does my head in.

David, for the most part that's pretty much correct, but last year (or last winter, possibly this year) there was a record set in that there was snow on the ground in all 50 states at once...admittedley, the snow in Florida was just a very light sprinkle in the northern parts.

I have just done a two way journey Blantyre to Ayr, East Kilbride to Fenwick was quite nasty, not helped by the the green welly brigade driving Range Rovers & VW Touraregs like idiots. The female driving the VW had made no attempt to clear 4 inches of snow off the windscreen or any other window or mirror and had simply turned on the wipers and drove off through Eaglesham this was at 8.50 am with schools going in , the Range Rover driver nearly caused a multi-vehicle pile up by cutting from the outside lane to get to a slip road when it was already too late --- luckily the truck driver had already anticipated he was dealing with a plonker. Plonker of the day goes to the 3 series driver who managed to go on to the grass and hit a bollard on a stretch just south of Kilmarnock where the roads were almost completely clear.

I was amazed by the number of people with snow socks on today, and the shear weight of traffic going nowhere. And the number of people driving faster than I was, considering I was happily enjoying some controlled and carefully placed sideways action in a full time 4WD rally-esque car, there were people in FWD runabouts booting it round roundabouts faster than I would want to risk! And someone in a Rangerover doing 25 in the 60 sections holding the entire world up despite it being just a bit wet on the road.

All-wheel-drive with LSD, mid-engined Bongo Bus with brand new knobbly-bobbly snow tyres. Kitted out with stove, fuel water, food, shovels, blankets, snow chains, spare clothes, winter woolies, and a scraper attached to a furry mitt. Bring on the snow!!

wow, someones expecting allot of snow

I've got a fwd focus with all season tyres (all be it with all the right winter ratings), I might throw a shovel in the boot at some point - its ground clearance is too low to bother with any more than that......

...but my backup plan involves ice axe's, crampons and all my winter walking gear - enough stuff to live in the mountains for a week

Ah, well, it's a bit of a pet hate of mine.....
The journey from my house to work involves some steep hills, travelling over some high moor roads and most of these roads are not high priority for snow clearance. In my opinion, you should not be out on the roads in an unsuitable vehicle. I have seen so many crashes, pulled cars out of ditches, sat behind cars woefully unsuitable for the road conditions and its usually the same type of clueless twonk in a vehicle with wide low profile tyres, wondering why they can't burn their way through the ice. Similarly, if you can't drive in the snow, or you're too scared to venture beyond a crawl in first gear, stay at home. Get the feck out of my way! Its winter. The nice weather folks on the telly don't always get it right but looking out of the window will give you a clue.....
So, any cars I intend to usef in the snow have snow tyres and/or snow chains. They have enough gear to get me and my family home or enough crisps and pop to keep us alive until those pillocks blocking the road get out of the way.
Amen...

I know what you mean

but no worries there for me, last winter I was out and about nearly every day - 6" of snow on the road is no problem for me
(much more than that and I'd have think twice as the car would ground out on the stuff)

the one that really gets me is when you see every one driving in single file on the dual carrageway / mottor way despite the fact that both lanes have been ploughed / treated
it felt like I was just about the only one using the other lane to overtake slow people and lorries (safley) on the dual carageways up here - I got hundreds of dirty looks from people sitting at 20mph in the other lane

I know the limits of my crappy hatchback and try to stick to them - the hard packed icy stuff (untreated) was a bit tricky on a 1 in 3 slope round an 'S' bend , but then thats on a private road, so no worries there either.
I did have to dig it out once last year, but then I had parked it by raming it into a 16" deep snow drift
(you might have guessed by now this isn't a shinny new focus I'm talking about )

but if it comes down to it I only really need to go 5 miles to work and the gritter lorry drivers all seem to live near me, get there pies/crisps/papers at the co-op round the corner and get the grit next to my work

I've literally GOT to go back in the winter. Loved the place, absolutely loved it. Need to see the northern lights and the snow, as well as doing some 4x4ing in the interior.

Our hire car had them "always on" so didn't really notice to be honest, but I did find that I would drive to places and go sight seeing at 3am and wonder why I felt a bit tired - midnight sun is very very confusing for the brain! Spent hours sat beside ice bergs watching them roll over and over and creak and crunch.

^^ we didn't have to deal with midnight sun, just 2-3 hours of daylight max

had a few comedy moments here:

the path was covered in 4" of solid ice nearly all the way - and you'll know what some of the drop off's are like
