I should add that I always prefer RWD to FWD - always have done! Better steering, often a better gearbox, generally a 'right way around' feeling.

Trouble is, it can be 'exciting' if you lose the back end and don't instinctively know what to do. It's a lot more sudden than FWD's understeer.

I had some more thoughts about my original post - I'd still recommend getting the boring car... but build the Locost in the background so you can insure it with a year or two of ncd under your belt - you'll have a far better chance of getting cover that way.

Now, if you can find a tame RWD car...
... one of my first cars was a frog-eye sprite - looked nice, cornered beautifully, totally gutless! Insurance didn't cost me too much. Doubt if you'd find one of those, though.

cheers,
David

Totally agree with that statement, hard to quantify but that "right way round" feeling counts for a lot with me!

well , if its safe RWD you want , get a volvo .

they are a bit barge like as std , but do handle well yes they actually do , they dont feel that involved , but i have to catch myself when i look at the speedo .

i drive an escort diesel most days - and its uber boring

a 240 GLT has all the luxurys and is pretty good due to uprated anti roll bars etc - you just cant chuck them about like a small fwd car - and it teaches you to be smooth etc .

food for thought

indeed! Waiting for a hail of abuse, I have actually considered a Volvo 240 estate a few times now, just the engine thing held me back, would need more than the 2.3 power wise I think, and I don't like the Renault v6.

I rather have another 940 turbo, that was a nice car. I replaced it with an 850GLT, never been bothered by its front wheel driveness apart from when pulling away from a standstill.
