VAG 1.9tdi....
Just what are these motors good for milage wise?
I'm looking at a a6 estate final edition with 115k on the clock, 2004 reg with every option, 7k.
I'll need about 10 years out of the car, taking it to about 230k. Is that out of the question as long as its maintained properly? Its only
been used as a motor way car doing about 25k a year and drives as good as a new one, however the older ones like this seem to be better built.

£7k is a lot of money for a car with that mieage on, I would be amazed if you cant find one with lower mileage.
Do you NEED to have a car that big? And an Audi?
You will get a cheaper VW or Seat which will be the same car underneath too.
All that said, the VAG TDI is good for 250k apparently. Is it a PD (130 or 150bhp) or a std?
If its a PD make sure its been serviced every 10k miles!

Get an old BMW E39 5 series. Pick these up much cheaper and I took my last one to the double ton easily. My current 530 sport is a bambino at 114k
miles! The weasels are pretty good too!

Its about £800 under what it should be! if it had 50-70k on the clock it'd be 11k to buy.
I do need a big car, 2 large dogs, baby, 2 adults plus all the crap that goes with us! Its got a full audi history.
A passat doesn't quite have the same amount of space inside.... Seat.... german engine, screwed together in spain
Also none of the VAG group use's the a6 chassis.
I've been looking around, a big 5 series would be ok but general running costs etc are high. its a 130bhp engine.

My Skoda Octy has 235k on it and going strong, still gives me 65mpg on a run - just needs a little tlc (oil & filter every 5k).

ALL engines if are well maintained will last you a long time.
It also depends on the way you drive it.
Our Renault 21 in Greece, was a 1.4L engine, the one from a R5GT without the turbo and the engine lasted for 300K miles before it came to a stop
because of a radiator leak and after suffering 7 bad overheating issues which had made the internals look white.
Now the car has a 1.8 16v engine from a Clio RSi and is still working spot on even after 470K miles.

Had a ride in a diesel Mondeo mini-cab recently (03 plate IIRC) which was running sweet as a nut at 280k miles. The interior looked tatty (as
you'd expect), but the exterior looked fine for a 6 year old car. Owner/driver said he does an oil and filter service every 15k and adds about
0.5 litres between services.
Modern engines are pretty damned good if well maintained. Even then it's usually an external factor such as poor cooling or electronics that
lets them down.

thats my thinking, VAG group cars upto 2004 seem to have the best build quality, much more so than newer versions where they've seemed to try
and reduce production costs. My reason for the 1.9tdi is that its been around for ages and 2004 was the last year it was used so it must be at its
design zenith!?

In my experience, running costs (Service etc) of BMWs is probably cheaper than VW/Audis nowadays...

I had a 1.9Tdi in my 1998 audi A4. Bought at 68k, sold at 220k.
Engine worked fine although it breathed a bit in the end it was fine through the MOT.
Should be fine.
Cam-belts are at 60k intervals and is quiet expensive, so 115k might mean you have a bill on the way. I used to stretch the intervals a bit and never
got caught out, but I am not recommending it.

Cambelt was done march 08 They reckon 5 years or 80k now however I think in another 3 years it'll be ready again.

Cambelts:
Seat recommend 4 years or 60k miles
VW recommend 5 years or 60k miles
Audi recommend up to 6 years.
Go figure, they are all the same engine, same parts, built in te same factory. Know of some belts that have gone having only just done over 60k miles,
but not of any having gone solely due to age.
There's nowt wrong with the Seat build quality either, the only parts made in spain are the body and trim, everything else is made in germany
and assembled in spain.
The 1.9 TDI was available up to 2008 in Vw's (I know as my parents have a golf plus with it in), Audi may have stopped using it earlier though.
