OT WTD Info: Oil Rig Work?

I am absolutely sick to death of my job! I am currently working in a care home for violent and challenging young adults, which is a realy thrilling job, at times, however, the pay is realy rubbish and its lost some of the risk factor it had when I first started working here so I am desperately looking for the next challenge!
The Royal Marines rejected me (ongoing shoulder injury), the Para's rejected me (hayfever???) But I realy fancy doing some oil rig work! I hear the money is good but the risks are high, I also quite like the idea of being a comercial diver, and I am also informed that working on the rigs is quite a good route into it?
So, I guess what im asking of you guys is, do any of you know where I would start looking for a job on a rig?
I know alot of people are out of work at the moment and this may seem insulting to some of you, im sorry, but im just soo tired of the normal routine, there are plenty of jobs out there, they are just in care!

Cheers in advance guys
Jason Gray

try here http://www.oilcareers.com/worldwide/

a good route into this if you're not bothered what you do, is to train up as an NDT technician and volunteer to work offshore as its is not so popular.

I am also looking into a diving carrer and did a familiarization day at Frotwilliam dive school, the prices in the uk are very high for the course, i am very keen on going to durban to do the training as they are one of the first dive schools and for the costs reason.. durban offers a good package for parts 4,3 and what they call part 2 but is one with accomodation.

Oil rigs? In my experience... dirty, depressing sh1t holes. A very tough way to make your money!

There is a small number who seem to enjoy the experience, but for most it's a means to an end and nothing else... income.

I would certainly not recommend them to anyone, but each to their own... won't hurt to give it a go as labouring staff first and see how you get on with the 'lifestyle' before picking up new trades / skills specifically for the purpose of going 'offshore'.

As for commercial / rig diving... never done it and don't know a lot about it. My cousin does and his own description of the 'lifestyle' wouldn't differ much from my sentiments above surrounding rigs in general.

Each to their own and all that, but not for me... !

Good luck with whatever you pursue though - who knows, you may be one of that 'select few' who love it!

I'm sitting on a rig as I type. Not offshore though but a land rig in Saudi. I don't do much offshore here but done quite a bit in Nigeria a few years back.

Anyway, as said above, most of they websites are what to look for but rather than just looking at the obvious rig companies look at the many service companies that work on the rigs or support services. Ones like Halliburton, Schlumberger, Baker, Weatherford, Franks and the like. NDT is also a way in as everything needs tested at six month intervals.
The money (basic) isn't as good as it used to be by all accounts. The days of travelling Lear Jet from Geneva to Algeria (as one of our older guys tells us) is gone. You can no longer drink a beer while you're working any more and the drillers I used to see smoking over a gas well are mostly gone or reformed characters. Still, despite all that it's still an interesting industry and the extra rewards for risk, etc make it up to a decent wage (and six months off a year helps too).

I was going to post a pic but my interweb is a bit slow out here. If it catches up with the rest of time I'll add it in later.

My mate works for KCA Deutag, rig off coast of Algeria. He must like it really but often calls it a floating cell! Apparently not a lot of jobs going at the mo, but he is a senior Electrician so maybe only looks at those types of vacancies.

He says the Nigerian rigs offer a bit more, no idea why Slater posted some pics of a new cannon they installed on a Nigerian rig, that made interesting reading.
