Tin Top needed advise

Hello all,

Unfortunatley whilst my wife was taking my son to hospital this Tuesday, they were hit in the side by some boy racer. Upside is they are both ok. Downside is the Picasso is likley to be written off. Just had bodyshop call me saying quote is £3900 and glasses guide value car at £3100.

Question is, I am likley to be getting a insurance payout and need to get the wife a new car. We have two kids so saftey is important. Does not have to be as big as the Picasso so what do you suggest. Saw a 2002 Honda Civic 1.6 exec, full leather etc etc but did have 109k miles.

Any advise, recommendation very welcome. Need to move quite quick...

£3k buys you a very tidy Mondeo (could get a tidy TDCi for that), and for a family car they are a really good drive.

for that you could buy a nice second hand volvo estate, there's not much that can take them out. My 750 was £1500 and before I sold it to my dad was mint.

£3k will get you a very wide range of cars.

Buy something which will do the job you want it to and which you will like.

If you like it you'll look after it

I just did a search on ebay for cars between £2500 and £3000 and it came back with 6786 results why not have a look?

TDCI mondeo's can be scary costly beasts, local taxi firm recons the turbo's go 70-80k, if the injection pump goes ~100k it takes out the injectors which are £250 a piece and need setting up in the ECU.

My mates one went, he started looking at low mileage second hand engines as a cheaper alternative to fixing. The turbo blew.

Sorry - but thank god another Picasso is off our roads! Both my parents and my sister bought one (without talking to the car nut in the family). They are dreadful cars designed by drawing half a car and mirroring it! Yuck. Rant over.

Those Civics are good little cars - but as said, you can get a wide range of cars for that money. You need to consider more of what you want (large boot, safety, mpg, fun to drive, interesting etc).

The Picasso and the Civic are actually only 4* NCAP cars - if safety is top of your list, spend some time on the NCAP site, and find a 5* car that fits your requirements.

Unlike the petrol version Mondeo TDci 's are picking up a very bad reputation as potential money pits. Likewise Renault diesels are best given a very wide berth.


The only problem with the Honda is the mileage Honda's of that generation were very very reliable nothing would go wrong with them until they hit about 140,000 to 160,000 miles then they seem to reach the end of the design life span and lots of trivail things break in quick succession.
Not matter how good a six year old Civic with 104 k on the clock can't be worth more than about 2k.
Look for a lower mileage example most bread and butter Honda Civics are bought by retired people and do well below average mileage, shop around you may well find a civic with less tthan 50k on the clock for just over 3k.

You could get a decent golf or 307 if thats the sort of thing your after. depends on what your going to use it for.

I would like to say I'm a fan of the picasso, I like the way it looks and the way it drives.

I'd vote Japanese or German... or Korean.

Nothing french or Italian for that sort of money.

A friend has a 2002 honda civic 1.6 with 203k on the clock. Not a single thing has gone wrong with it.

I'm with frankly on this one...

I wouldn't look at anything french... and for the money we are talking about I wouldn't look at italian cars either.

Jap cars are for the most part bullet proof, and german cars are...well... german cars.

For that sort of money you could get a decent 2nd hand VW or a nice SEAT (part of the VW Audi group). Volvos are great for safety but I think their 2nd hand prices might be a little higher.

Japanese maybe but you won't get a decent German car for that money without it being old and a used korean car will cost you in the long run as it will be worth nothing when you sell it.

I've had it from 21k, taxi'd it for about 9 months, the only things that have really gone wrong on it is the wheel alignment (bit of a strange one) and the engine was playing up but we managed to trace that to bio diesel.

Add to that a 4* rating (for the 05 model I have) and it is pretty much the biggest car we could get (even Audi A8 didn't have any more room in the back), heck this is the first time I'd keep a car if I won the lottery

Don't be too surprised if you end up getting new fuel injectors before you get to 80k miles --- Ford dealer only job as it needs connection to ford database to set the bar coded injectors up.

You can also look forward to the dual mass flywheel failling about the same mileage ---- at what mileage it happens depends a lot on how the car is driven ie on Mondeos given a hard life as taxis or driven by boy racers 50,000 miles or less is typical but treated more gently 90,000+.
Flywheel failure usually knackers the starter as the debris out the flywheel chokes up the starter drive.

Auitomatics have the dreaded JATCO transmision ---- not exactly known for reliability.

i've got the focus tdci which i believe is identical to the mondeo.

Heard some people say that they die with terrible fuel pump / injector issues. Local taxi driver had 150,000 on his without a problem.

at 60k i've had the EGR valve done. Local ford specialist has the computer and lots of mates who still work in ford hence can program stuff.

One thing i have found is the quality of the fuel makes a difference. I now alternate between a supermarket and a branded forecourt. Hopefully the 50 / 50 mix will keep things clean.

Random fact - if you fill up with fuel they can tell you what garage you went too unless it was a supermarket. Each garage has its own mix of additives, except supermarkets that add nothing to their fuel. How do i know this - g/f had to sit through a court session where someone explained it so he could justify saying where the bloke got the fuel for the petrol bomb from

thanks for all the reply's. Gives me something to think about. As for the mondeo deisel, I have a 56 plate and its done 102,000 and not a thing has gone wrong with it, full service history and it seems to get better as the miles go on. Lease company rang me to say its just turned 3 years and is due for replacement and I said I want to keep it!
