anyone got a haynes book for a 1998 astra?
if so, could you scan the pages on engine cooling and email them? or point me in the direction of one i can download for free?
i've tried many times before, but they never seem to actually have anything to download
for the x20xev engine

still confused about all the cooling pipes (especially the 2 heater ones on the cylinder head)
i think they both ulimately go to the water pump. i'd like to just blank them both off. the guy who built my engine said its fine to do that.
he's built loads of engines over the years.
others say it can't be done and will cause problems with overheating.
i'd like to see where the water is supposed to flow, as i didn't have all the cooling attached when i got the engine.
what have you done with yours phil?
i kind of get the idea i could just do with the top and bottom hoses. as the top one comes out the cylinder head (doesn't it?)

This is how i've done mine, if you look from the front of the engine the tail on the front left just behind by the inlet cam, blank it off, the
tail behind the exhaust cam(thermostat housing) i've run mine to my Corsa header tank only because the header tank has two returns, the outlet
on the rear of the head blank it off, as for the flow it pumps up from the bottom hose through the pump round the engine out of the stat to the rad
and round again, does that cover it?

certainly does!
thats what i'd planned for it. but some say it was a bad idea. if you did it and it worked for you, i'll go with it too
so, ali plates to entirely blank off both heater connections (back of cylinder head and in front of inlet manifold)
so the only ones you have are the top hose from the thermostat housing, bottom hose on water pump, and the 8mm tail on the thermostat housing to the
header tank?
sounds easy enough then. from what others said, i thought i'd end up with hot spots on the cylinder head

Yeah that how mine is, and a return from the rad to the other return on the header tank, also feed the header tank into the bottom hose, keep the Y
piece that goes from the pump to the head and use a 135deg bend with a tail on it, feed the header pipe into that then carry on to the bottom rad
outlet, hth
btw mine was honking along but the clutch has gone now

awesome. i'll see what hoses i have. there were a few attached. i'm sure i've got that Y piece somewhere.
that all makes perfect sense. i've got a radiator with a 8mm tail on the top, which will go to the header like yours has, and the themo housing
one will go too. and so as you've done, i'll get a corsa header tank too.
what gearbox do you have? if its a type 9, what did you do for a spigot bearing? the guy who built my engine said i shouldn't need one.

I'm using a Getrag box from a Manta and i'm not using a spigot bearing either, to be honest i forgot haven't had any problems
though, the Corsa header tank i used was off a 1.4 and was the smallest i could find, i could use a smaller one though if i can find one.

i've got a mate who breaks corsas, i'll see what he's got
might be a bit tight on places to mount it, but should be able to find something lol
have you got any photos of your engine all built up and installed anywhere on the interweb?

No i haven't, the one in my archive died and the one in there now is not as pretty, but seems to be the best one i have built as it keeps up
with a tuned blade BEC so i'm happy with it, i've got your email address so i will take a few photos and mail them to you, if thats ok?
