Any contractors here?

Afternoon all.

I was just wondering if anyone on here is a contractor? I've been working on a 6 month contract for the last couple of months, and it is my first after always having "permanent" jobs in the past.

I was just wondering how everyone handles sickness though? I've had a few days off ill in the last month or so, but have been taking the approach that no work = no pay. I'm currently under an umbrella agency pay scheme too by the way...

Cheers
Andy

i have a personal sickness policy.took it out years ago cause although i get sick pay,its at the company's discretion, and they dont pay for broken ankles when you fall off a crosser.less than 10 a month, less depending on what cover you want.need 2 months out of work before they pay tho,so save up 2 months mortgage and sleep at night..

No a contractor myself, but I'd have thought it must be part of any employment contract whether employed full time or on a temporary basis - particularly if working via any kind of agency who handles the payment element.

Do you have a copy of the Ts & Cs?

I've been a contractor for 10 years or more, I'm afraid sick pay has always been a case of no work - no pay
I did look at insurance for such things but always worked out really expensive with hideous terms attatched.
Kev

I still wouldnt swap for full time employment even at twice the payrate though.

Edit to say:
The rate of pay has always been slightly higher for contractors to offset such things as holiday and sickness.. (thats what they kep telling me anyway!).
Of course the other dowside is redundency etc always = £0, just a friendly boot out of the front gate, lol

You can get sick pay as a contractor through an Umbrella company, but you lose most of it with the standing charge to handle your paperwork

You need to be off 3 days before you qualify

Agency workers usually get stuffed when it comes to holidays and sick pay. The guys we use don't get anything. I'm employed through the company and I get holiday and sick pay. Sick pay is only after 3 days tho.

Your only way to get back sick pay is to join a "union" and get them to claim it back, but it's likely to loose you your job. So best save it up till later, applies to holiday pay too

I've been contract (Composite company, then Ltd. when G.B. changed the rules) for eight and a half years. Oddly enough I now take more time off sick than I did as staff - as staff I felt that I should get in if I possibly could, as a contractor, it's only me that's losing the money, so if I feel a bit off, I can decide whether a lie-in or the money is more important. I don't have any sort of insurance (other than PPI - and it is just about okay for contract work), but I do have the limited backup of my wife working part-time.
