My turn for the bad news and request for solidworks info
Looks like I'm going to be made redundant along with the rest of the design engineering people in the Uk. The proposal was put out on the 18th
and the 18th of december will see consultation end and notice given.
They are giving us all atleast 2months (3 in my case) notice so not unemployed at christmas and I've got 8 years in and they are giving 2 weeks
(full pay) for every year so it shouldn't be too bad.
I'm a Systems Engineering manager at the moment but spent 10 years as a Mechanical engineer so will be looking for either moving forward but in
the short term until I finish I'm brushing up my skills so far
c/c++ , access ,excel and currently working on Matlab. Im also pretty good on proe but 'd like to pick up another Cad system and it looks like
solidworks is the best. I see there is a student version but do you have to give any proof of being a student to get it? And does it have limits
compared with the full up.
cheers guys

bad news
Only solice I can offer is that redundancy money can go a long way if you are careful with it, and there are jobs still out there.
All the best with whatever comes of it.

be careful how you spend the money, if the unfortunate happens and you have to go to the Jobcentre, you will need to account for it all.
Life is like a bowl of fruit, funny how all the weird looking ones are left alone

Redundancy is not the end of the world, sometimes it is a power for good. The problem some people have is that because they were on £30k they
don't want anything less in a new job. I was made redundant twice and both time within 3 months I had work, I earned less than before but much
more than the dole. I was honest with my new employers and when an oportunity to move on again came I took it. The employers I had got good value and
were happy to see me progress. There is work out there if you want it bad enough.

Yeah - good luck. My factory closes early-ish next year. As I'm relatively foot-loose I've been able to turn it into a positive and am
off travelling. I employ engineers and from what I can tell, you are amongst the best-placed to find work - at least in South Wales and the West.
You're blend of traditional mech skills and IT literacy is very much sought after! I've lost a lot of good guys since the announcement of
closure and the ones I've clung onto I've had to offer well above average wages to stay.
By the way, I'm a NUS member (part time Masters) so if you need any help picking up a student version, drop me a u2u and we'll sort
something out.

There's a load of jobs on the Australian Govt website, and the separate states, for engineers. Go ahead, and make the best decision you ever
will in life!

bad luck for the job.
on solidworks, i didnt buy my student license as it was provided by the university, however it is a full version i have including all the extra add
ons like photoworks and flowworks.
not sure on providing proof, logic would say you would need to.

Some companies have been known to offer retraining and job search help for redundancees. Its always worth asking during consultation process.
2 weeks full pay for each year of service is rather good.
Sorry to hear the news but on a plus point there does seem to be more engineering jobs about now compared to same time last year.
