MG ZT CDTi - experiences
Hi Guys,
Looking at chopping in my t reg 1.2 clio for soemthing a bit bigger, grown up, can take 14000 motorway miles with decent MPG and tow the Indy.
I cant stop getting drawn to these cars. SOOOOO much for your money including the "common rail" BMW desel engine.
Anythingt o look out for, as I cant find a better looking and good spec car for the £4k mark

theyr nice cars. My mate has one and loves it. My father inlaw had a 75 cdti auto as a company car. Lovely to drive and didnt go too bad. I think
he averaged 45mpg so a manual would be more.

All you need to know
Handling is very good -- but not as much different as has been claimed in contemporary road test from the 75 ---- The road tests were on brand new
cars once the 75s have done a few miles the suspension settles
Assuming it has manual gearbox "nowt major ever goes wrong with em".
Because the turbo is a simpler design the diesel is actually a more reliable version of the engine than BMW used themselves and in the Freelander. All
ZTs shopuld have the 131ps engine which pulls like a train. Early 75s had the 117ps but the only difference is software.
Autobox is the JATCO 5 speed but seems to last longer in the 75/ZT than it does in other manufacturers cars. Any JATCOs made after about 2002 have
a modified valve body which is less prone to failure. Personally I would still avoid an automatic.
Minor stuff -- handbrakes are always useless, the rear disc-drum needs removed and cleaned out and the handbrake shoes roughened up and adjusted
before every MOT.
Engine ECU is in the scuttle area below the heater air intake if the scuttle drains are not kept clear can result in the ecu getting very wet.
However once the drains are cleared out no lasting damage usually occurs.
Early 75s suffered from premature MAF failure but MG-Rover modified the design of the air intake (actually just added a bit of alloy sheet as a
deflector) to prevent contamination of the sensor by road spray in wet weather.
MAF failure is now a lot less common.
Electric door unlocking can fail only cure is a new latch assembly on the affected door cost about 90 pounds + fitting which is a fiddly and quite
major job -- Whole system is from BMW parts bin.
SRS warning light illuminated on the dash -- 99 times out 100 the cause is the connector under one of the seats.
Under bonnet fuel pump -- simple fix fit new pump.
Cooling fan -- check it works on both speeds if not working on low speed on cars made from approximately 2002 the cause is usually a heavy duty
resistor is burned out. On earlier cars the system is more complex best & cheapest cure is fit a Kenlowe fan
Rear bush on the front wishbones seem to start to fail around 70,000 miles, pattern parts available can be replaced without removing the wishbone
--- but access is very restricted needs a flex head 18mm ring spanner to undo the nuts.
One bush on the rear suspension can fail but this isn't that common.
Front struts can sometimes need replaced symptom is a rattle from front of car often mistaken for a loose undertray.
Personally if it were me I would alternatively consider buying a 2.5Kv6 and convert it to LPG, same fuel costs cheaper to buy a low mileage one and a
lot more power.
