What was that bang?!
I was nosing round Pistonheads just now, and saw this photo...
Apparently he'd just ploughed through 4 feet of water in his Subaru and something in the engine took exception and backfired...

Haven't seen one like that for a while. Seems to be a lot less common since electronic engine management came in.

 reminds me of old days.....
My friend used to switch off the ignition while driving, in those days we had carburettors . Then after a few seconds ignition back on and you will
guess the result.

Could it be the water stopped the sparks long enough for some petrol to get into the exhaust and then re-ignite.
Seems feasible.
Still its only a silencer, not the side of the engine thats opened up!

Was driving down the M6 in an Mgb years ago and it kept backfiring when i lifted off the throttle .Eventually it backfired extremely loudly and lost
all power and the exhaust became very noisy, crawled down to the next exit and pulled off and looked underneath to find the same had happened to the
center silencer.Luckily in those days petrol stations still sold spares and I bought a condenser and points at the nearest service station and fitted
them, power was then back to normal but it was a bit noisy.
