SD card problems
I've just bought an SD card of eBay - brand new and still in the packet. It doesn't work with either my PC or my camera (my old SD card
does). Before I complain that I've been sold a duff, Have I missed something or been a bit silly? Are they all supposed to work with any
drive? The new one is marked Lexar Multi-use 4GB SDHC.

A sdhc card wont work in a sd slot sounds like youve bought the wrong card.

The HC suffix denotes high capacity, which may be why you are having problems with it, especially if your camera or pc card reader are old. Almost all
expandable memory ports have a limit as to the memory they can read, while an sdhc card should work with an sd slot, if your slot has an upper limit
of say a gig, and your card is 4gig, it won't read properly!

Some equipment will only work with certain versions of a memory card ie up to version 4 for example, if yours is a newer version ie 7 then it wont be
compatible.
I had the same thing with an old compact digital camera.

Buy a HD SD USB card reader off ebay I paid 75p for one last week, just waiting for it to arrive.

The problem is the fat16 format only supports 2gb, so you need fat32.
Your camera may not support fat32, but your pc should.

It's more than just that, see the compatibility problem of 4G and greater cards here

Yep, as said, there are compatabilty issues with sd cards.
- Fortunatly my camera supports SDHC but when i bought my current 8gb card i did need a new card reader.

as above, if your device supports SDHC you should be able to use all the way up to 32Gb
but if it doesn't then 2Gb is your limit

for an internal multi card reader to fit a 3.5" or 5.25" bay....

FAT16 can support up to 4GB volumes (with a lot of wasted space if you store lots of small files), but this probably isn't the issue.
The main problem is that SDHC and plain old SD use a different addressing scheme. A device that supports SDHC can use SD cards but not the other way
around, unless the manufacturer provides a firmware upgrade.

Haven't used a floppy disk for 10 years, and 1.44M seems almost comical today 
The one I posted claims to support SDHC, but that one supports M2 and MicroSD if you ever get a new phone that uses those.

I still use floppys on some old machines for booting etc, but I guess don't need it on the new one
I've had the microSD cards for ~6 years now - got a 16Gb in the phone now (full of tunes  )
and one of them came with this tiny wee thing for nowt its really useful:
