Vauxhall's dont you love em?
Hi All
My V Reg Vectra 1.8 has developed yet another fault.
This time the problem is a whining engine.
I took the car to a local garage for an MOT a few weeks ago and i asked him to sort out an idling problem and to have a look at a whining sound coming
from the cam belt end of the engine.
The guy assured me that the cam belt idlers were probably shot and would need replacing along with the cam belt. Being a lazy arse i asked him to just
sort it.
To cut a long story short he replaced all the bits he said he would and cured the idle prob and gave it an MOT. However the whine is still there and
its even worst now and i am £300 the lighter thanks to Mr Garage.
The whine sound like it’s coming from a device powered by the ancillary belt.
Does any one know how you remove this belt or even reduce the tension on it. I am getting the Haynes manual but any help would be much appreciated.
Other faults I have to fix are: - no cold air from the aircon and a blowing exhaust manifold but there are just not enough hours in the day…
Cheers

aircon might need regassing, could be linked to the belt noise though. smash it and see!

if its one of them flat belts they do make noise, check for cracks on the ribbed side,if it looks ok some wd40 quietens them up a bit,the manifold
bolts have a habit of snapping in the head and are a right pain to remove, usually got to take the head off and send it to an engineering co
who cares who wins

Has your a/c compressor siezed up, would explain two of the faults.

Sounds like the clutch in the A/C compressor is shot to me, hence the whining and the lack of chillies
If you can keep you head, whilst all others around you are losing theirs, you are not fully aware of the situation

Thanks for all the help guys
It turned out to be the auxilliary belt tensioner idler. A bit of a bugger to get to but replacing it has removed the whine.
The AC still needs sorting but the guy at the vauxhall dealer said that the system would need recharging what ever i do so its probably a job for
them.
Another one of the many faults is a blowing exhaust system. I thought it was blowing from the gasket between the exhaust manifold and the down pipes
but it seems that i have a cracked manifold. The crack is quite apparant and is on the casting between the join of 3 and 4 cylinders. The crack is
about an 1 1/2 inches long and quite easy to see. Can anyone think of a reason why i should NOT try to weld the crack up in situ?
Cheers again

two things, make sure its not made of 'something not to be welded', and obviously disconnect the battery incase it objects to the welder
earth.
