household lighting.
Right this is a bit of a random question, but where else can i ask such a collection of experts all in one place?
the light fittings in our old house were all in the centre of the rooms. that house was built late thirties.
our current house, built in the 50's seems to have all the light fittings placed as close to the windows as possible. which looks a bit daft.
was there some thinking in the 50's that the sourec of artifical light should come from the same direction as natural light?
i can think of any other reason why they might place them there.

I always thought it was so that you don't cast shadows of 'nooky' on the curtains at night

It is as baldy says. Daft innit. I have moved mine back to the middle of the room. Makes hell of a difference to the light in the room. Plus your
neighbours can see shadows in the curtains of you doing what you do.

My house had lights near the windows when we bought it. Built 30s but rewired some time later. My mum told me the same reason for why it was done
like that!
I thought sod that and put the lights where I wanted them in the centre of the rooms during the refurb (not least because I was fitting fans too).
Did shadow tests outside and can't see a damn thing anyway, and that was before I fitted the blackout curtain liners. God knows what curtains
must have been made of back then - J-cloths? Or perhaps back then even the very thought of such a display was so risqué they'd put their lights
in stupid places just in case?
Either way - load of arse - put your lights where you want!

Mick met Paddy in the street and said;
“Paddy, will you draw your bedroom curtains before making love to your wife in future?”
“Bejaysus – But why?” Paddy asked.
“Because,” said Mick, “the whole bloody street was laughing when they saw you making love yesterday afternoon.”
Paddy said, “Stupid bastards, the laugh's on them... I wasn't home yesterday!”
