Someone cancelled my Credit Card

Just had a bizarre experience.

Tried to use my card on Monday at M&S and it wasn't accepted so I thought it was a dodgy machine.

Just tried to get some diesel and it got rejected again.

Called up my card supplier who told me I called on Monday and reported my card stolen. They have sent a new one out to me.


It wasn't me so:

1) How did they get my details?
2) How did they get through the security checks - there are passwords on my account that no one knows?
3) What is the scam?

As soon as the card was reported stolen it was suspended and the new card issued to my home address so unless the card is intercepted what can they do with the details now?

Strange.

It would be easy for a temporary postman to do it by intercepting a creditcard bill, but without a chip and pin it is useless in shops here.
It is not useless abroad or on the internet though, so keep an eye on your postie and warn your neighbours

if it was me i would call and cancel the new one in the post and get another one delivered to your local branch. It wont be stolen by the door to door postman it will most likely happen in the sorting office.

I had a card cancelled by my credit card company cause they thought my details may have been stolen.

My bank is online so no branches to collect it from.

They apparently have the number, location and recording of the person who reported the card stolen so they are reviewing the security tapes.

And it wasn't my wife - I don't let her anywhere near my credit cards

Not wanting to scare you too much, but this happened to me last autumn. When I got my new statement for my new card it had £950 pounds on it from Barclaycard Consierge Service.
Apparently someone called Barclaycard from the Maldives pretending to be me saying they had lost there wallet so can you please cancel the card and send me some emergency cash to them while they are still on holiday!!!

Thankfully Barclaycard refunded the money after many heated phone calls, the cheeky cants even suggested I should pay then £89 a year to prevent such an occurence happending again.
They never did explain how someone else manged to answer all the security questions correctly.

Needless to say I'am not a Barclaycard customer anymore....

You would think the bank would be suspicious of someone called "Barclay Card"

Police informed, credit report checked and no re-direct/hold on my mail.

Doesn't look like anyone got anything (yet).

Fraud teams are now investigating.

I am sure you did, but you did ensure that your current Home address is still correct with the card company.

Very similar thing happened to me, but they changed my home address to "theirs" - First I knew was when the card co (barclaycard ) rang me to ask if I had just spent £9500 in the past 2 days.

First thing I checked was what address the new card had been sent to.

It's coming to me which is a good sign.

Are you sure none of your mates have done it as a joke? I was under the impression that cancelling a card was quite easy.

On a side note, would it not be better to keep your pin as changing it would get you a slip sent in the post with the new one on, thus making the interception easier?
