Tw*ting IT guy @ work

We have an IT guy at work who thinks he's God. He's already blocked my access to this site, today he decided to block access to Dave Adrews web site! I mean, WTF!! Its not loke I'm looking at porn or anything. And before I get abuse for slacking at work, its only in my lunch break.

Anyway, what can I do? Anything?

I did see if the website:

www.ouritguysaw***er.com

and

www.ouritguysat**t.com

existed, but they don't. Will look good on the log thought!

Cheers

(Rant over)

You can try an anonymous web proxy. There are quite a few around, but beware that some of them have about a zillion pop-ups.

http://www.megaproxy.com/ is free and isn't too bad. Note that some web sites don't work very well through anonymous proxies (autotrader for one).

See if my site (www.chrisw.net) still works to see if it's the name that's been blocked or the whole server. If it's just the I'm sure there's a work around

A few options:

kiss his ass till he likes you and will do it as a favour.

Get in a position that he wants a favour- be it product samples you can get him that he can't get or something else- appeal to his weak tech-loving side... and bribe him.

Let him know that *you* are the customer and therefore he does as you tell him. Let his boss know that you are the customer and that full webaccess is necessary for your job.

Hack his machine after he goes home and browse his web logs. 99% chance there'll be some pr0n there.
Make a record and blackmail him with it.
Even clone his drive if necessary.

Start trashing a few machines around so he's so busy rebuilding them he can't waste time with the proxies.

Setup your own website with a Locostbuilders mirror and browse that instead!

Good Luck, HTH,

James

P.S. Don't get caught and p1ss him off. I know from experience an IT admin can make life very hard for you if they so choose!

maybe your terms and conditions of employment specifical prohibit you from using non work related web sites, even in a break. after all they pay for the access not you. a lot of companies has stopped blocking sites and strated sacking workers who go to prohibited sites.

Thats just the problem, there is no rear company policy! It mentions that personnal phone calls should not be abused, and then tagged on the end, that Internet activity is Logged at this time, but not monitored!

Think it was written before 'tinternet really took off.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I'll see how I get on today. Might just call him a c**t.

Cheers

I wouldn't upset him...

We IT guru's hate 'Users' at the best of times and believe me we can make life hell for people who upset us!

(woman at work had her printer disabled for 2 weeks and had to go 2 floors for every print - coz she tried going over my head!)

May sound like a crap solution but play to his ego... tell him how good the IT department are.... maybe even buy him a pint....

Works wonders round here!

Good luck

Is he interested in cars? Perhaps if you get him interested in what you're doing he may be sympathetic.

Dave's right about not upsetting him - he could make life far more difficult for you.

David

I actually quite like most of the punters here. There's only a couple that I've had to 'punish' for their behaviour! I've found that remotely executed occasional reboots or BSODs (blue screens of death) work wonders!

Gotta agree there- my main customer is a large mobile phone company. The clever punters (those who want Premier/A1/Platinum support) know that greasing palms with interesting phone prototypes or spare bits of hardware work wonders for how quickly jobs get done!

Thinking back to my desktop support days... every so often a pleased user/departmental manager would send my boss an e-mail thanking me for the work I'd done for them. Be it 'coz I'd stayed late to help them with a project or come in a weekends- whatever.
After they'd done that I never wanted to disappoint them so would always do that bit extra to make sure they got top service.

So, log a call about something. After the guy does it- send a thankyou to his boss for his good work. It may have a beneficial effect.

HTH,

James
