Being Bombarded By Automated Calls...
Any advice how best to knock this one on the head...
Keep getting automated-calls on the land-line from an unnamed source telling me that I may qualify for help to quash X% of debt using 'little
known government legislation'! Just press 2...
They block their number, so that's that avenue closed...
Dare I press 2, so I can tell them to get to... , or are there any dangers to doing this!?

can't you change some of the settings on your phone account ?
I think there are a few settings on the BT account for these kind of calls
(you can even change your account setting online if I remember right)

You could always try Telephone Preference Service, it worked for me.

Automated dialler calls originate from overseas and are generally not covered by TPS. they go through regional phases so will stop after a while as
they move to a new code.
In the US you can buy a device that fools auto diallers into thinking theyve called a fax machine and they will strike the number.
It may sound silly but when you answer the phone, dont speak for the first second or two.... if it's a person calling the very best thing to do
is stay calm and then say "hang on a sec" and put the receiver to one side and go do something else.... go back to the phone ten minutes
later

that won't be enough
havn't had time - but if you can pin enough folk down with a couple of options on the date (16 drivers I think)
then I can ask whats avalible

the people that had our number prior to us must have been complete idiots as we get calls from all sorts of crappy companies asking for them. i have
signed our number up to that site and we still get them.
the worst one is when the phone rings and says you have an sms from the bt messaging service press 1 to hear the message.
its funny that i have the bt messaging service considering its not even a bt line!! must be a scam to make you press 1 to accept a hideous call

1) If you speak to BT, they offer a service to allow you to block all calls that have their numbers withheld
2) If you are with BT, make a complaint to them immediately after a call. They should be able to take action. If you're with Virgin then
don't bother, just change your number - they're fecking hopeless for nuisance calls.

I just ask them hold on for a while and put the phone to the side.... if they persist and it is an automated call put the receiver next to a radio set
to 5 live (talking) it'll soon stop!

Yup. Before signing up for the TPS I used (if it was a human being on the other end) to do the "can you hang on a minute, I just need to switch
off the gas" type thing. since signing up with TPS I've had no nuisance phone calls....
Of couse the other thing to do is sign up with TPS then next time they ring (after the cut-off date the TPS give you) press 1 to get through to them
and ask them nicely what company they represent then say you're going to report them for breaching the TPS as well as sue them for harrasment.
Usually does the trick....
