OT - Anyone clued up on gas supply and rights? (Rant warning)
I appreciate I may well not get any answers to this question but I feel like I need to have a right good RANT.
The gas main in my street is currently being replaced, but there has been a number of problems which I'm not happy about.
Firstly they wrote to advise they will need access to the property before 8am which is fine as I work 9-5, so when it comes to the day in question
they want access at "about" 3. Then they dug up a big chuck of a private driveway without notifying us they would be doing so.
I then get a further letter stating they would be switching the gas off for a day but as I was due to be away for a few days I was not too concerned -
the letter did not mention needing access again. So I return hom elast night at just after midnight to find no gas!!! Called the helpline who
offered to get someone out first thing....9??! So off to bed with two duvets, absolutely baltic and then up in the morning and packed the missus off
to work without a shower (not happy as had spent the previous day walking round London all day and travelling).
So, wait in still no-one here at 10:30 so called up only to be told they don't start till 11. In theory they're coming round tonight now
so we'll see how that pans out!
Do I have a right to claim compensation for being freezing, unable to shower, 2 wasted hours off work and for my tea tonight?

definitely try it, but in actual fact, they have not left your house 'inhabitable' ie it still has a working toilet, running water, and
you have a kitchen to make food (even if its just a microwave) so i dont think any laws etc have been broken unfortunately. annoying to say the least
though, as they said someone would be round at 9, but don't start til 11. as for needing access to the property before 8, thats not to say
they'll be at your door at 8am, thats that they start going to doors on the street at 8am
definitely try it though, especially for diggin up your driveway

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

They do not have any right to dig up your property whatsoever, without your written permission.
This is called obtaining a wayleave.
When this happened to us and I phoned the area manager to ask him what the hell was going on, he almost pooed himself and offered to tarmac a
substantial area the was previously bare earth as a thankyou for not taking any legal action.
Tell them about the bent treacle edges!

Very true my son stop them digging his land up
+ when they come in your house they may check your boiler etc if they dont comply with regs they may not turn the gas back on

problem is that they do need access to reconnect gas, because if your house wasnt left safe (ie a gas hob left inadvertantly on) then it would be a
potential catastrophy.
However, its very poor communication by them, and in fact i would have expected there to be a 24 hour service for reconnections. What if you were an
old dear with nothing but gas heating?
