I think you summed it up well.
Yes its a shame when people die, but why does this mans death need reporting on the main national news over and over again?

is it on the news then? heard it last night, at which time it was unconfirmed.

this bit:
John Lydon said: "Above all else [Malcolm] was an entertainer and I will miss him, and so should you."

is intereting as much much much earlier he had said "As long as Malcom Mclaren is breathing, it is a minute too much"

Punk came along in 1976 (ish).
I'll leave it to the fans of the genre to narrow that down.

About that time, my musical interests had just started to awaken and I must confess, it was not in this direction at all.
I was fortunate enough to grow up in a small village with an unsually large number fo musicallly talented people and had lessons in theory, sight reading and playing at my mate's house every day after school. The stuff I learnt then has never ever left me.

I never got punk and could never find a reason to respect the fact that anyone could join in without actually learning how to properly play an instrument.
That might sound a bit exclusive, but there you go.

All my contemporaries were growing up listening to the Sex Pistols etc. whilst I was listening to Weather Report and Return to Forever.

It's always sad when a life ends, for whatever reason, but I wasn't a fan.

Firstly don't kid yourself that the so called punks could not play their instruments - some could and some could not.

.... but it boils down to what is the prupose of music?

Is it about playing note perfect complicated arrangements by dead peeps like beethoven, brahms, bach etc. or about instilling emotion in the listener?

Why play 50 notes in unison when one will do?

As for not getting it, the punk ethic was to get off yer a%%e and make music yourself instead of listening to a beary weirdy playing a 10 minute organ solo.

A bit like making your own car instead of buying one perhaps?

As for respect, how many records have you sold? And how many did the Sec Pistols sell?

Selling records doesnt buy respect. Each person can respect anything they like about someone and each to there own. A big time drug dealer gets respect from all his little dealer punks but just cos he sells loads of smack doesnt mean everyone should respect him.

As for respect.. How many deals of smack have you sold? and how many did Jezza?

Respect Jezza RIP man you were awsome Shouldnt everyone else think so?

He will, that was John Lydon in those adverts

I, for one think it's a shame. Ok he was not the most liked person in the world, but he pretty much invented punk and all it stood for. The world would be a duller place without him......RIP

What a shame someone cant accept someone elses opinion on somebody else. We all judge people we don't know. Woodster.. do you never call Gordon Brown, borr Johnson or any other politician, celebrity or anyone else that youve never met and dont kno We make judgements and opinions based on what we see or hear of them through whatever means and we are each allowed to do so. So really you are doing it right now about Scootz.

Get my point.. I think lots of people I have never met are Tw@tz hahaha..

Punk music and its culture was the most exciting thing that ever happened (for me).

Whilst malcolm had a lot to do with its explosion, he was generally disliked throughout the Punk early era because of his honesty to want to make big money, which in itself was anti-punk.
However there is no doubt, he promoted the theme probably better than anyone else.
And as for Punk`s not playing music.. C`mon, without the wishy washy hell of love sick s**t, disco, osmonds era it would never have happened. People had had enough of that and something else needed to be born.

Its pure aggression, adrenaline, non conformist, exciting and f**k you attitude was definately Locost.. quite right.

but if one one his sons bought some country life with his money, then technically MM paid and therefore bought them, although not physically involved in the financial transaction.

... closer to page 5.

I was into punk, had a great time, not quite got the energy for something similar now though!! Mclaren had some influence and made a living off it, no skin off my nose, fair play to him!!

He was a t**t but sometimes we need t**ts extracting the p**s to make us take a fresh look at life even if we end up feeling even more smug after doing so.

Now Damien Hirst & Tracey Emin have replaced MClaren & Westwood as Dailly Mail hate figures.

Hi

Am I alone in thinking that Never Mind The Bollocks is a seminal recording? MM and the Pistols certainly influenced popular music in my opinion.
Doesn't stop me appreciating 70's prog though.
