Well i wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!

Arc eye!
bugger me it ain't nice.i've known people who've had it and complained but having got away without getting it for so long i guess i got complacent.not again, waking up on your own in agony, unable to open eyes is scary.then try and use a phone and ring for help when you cant see isn't easy, sitting in hospital on your own blind isn't nice and fainting twice as someone peels your eyelids off your eyeballs isn't the best either.they're alot better today but it still feels like my eyelies are 380 wet and dry!
Heed this warning and take care gents!

Sad to hear of this. I have a learner you did exactly the same.

I was lucky when i did my welding course it happened to me but i realised it soon and stopped withing seconds.

A self dimming mask is a must.

Yeah, it's not pleasant is it? When I was in A&E the nurse tried getting me to read a standard eye test chart. When I said that I couldn't read it she asked me if I normally wore glasses!

i had it when i was 12ish.

just like i had sandpaper in the back of my eyes completely unstopable pain. truely horrid.

most annoying as i was fine while watching the guy weld all day, its the 6 hours later in the middle of the night when you start regretting it!!

My solution is the cheapest, dont do any welding.

you can have the best visor in the world and still get it...

my first case was from welding inside of a 1.5m wide steel tube....the arc flashes where reflecting in the back of the visor...

wet teabags work well.....

just because you are a character, doesnt mean you have character....

for all your bespoke parts, ali welding, waterjet, laser, folding, turning, milling, composite work, spraying, anodising and cad drawing....

u2u me for details

I work in a hospital and talk to fit sounding nurses most days on the phone.

The problem is I'm yet to meet a fit looking one and I've been here two years!

Beware the sirens call

There were a couple of nice ones when I was in, sadly I was in no condition to take advantage

p.s. hope the arc-eye doesn't last too long .

wearing clear safety glasses will stop arc eye, you will still be suffering from white spot, but no pain

This works for me, as long as they are UV resistant they will prevent arc eye as the UV radiation is what burns your conjunctiva and causes the soreness like sunburn.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

I've never tried that, always found a conventional welder quite effective

Ouch! What happened? I had a touch of arc eye once or twice when learning, but as I was only exposed for about a second before shutting off the welder, the symptoms weren't too bad. Just irritated itchy eyes in the middle of the night. Can't imagine what sort of exposure could cause such bad symptoms!

I had LASEK (where they remove the entire upper surface from the centre of your eye), rather than the more common LASIK, with post surgical complications.

It was pretty messy

I've had arc eye once, and that was one too many times as far as I'm concerned! Had to get my brothers girlfriend to drive me to the eye hospital at about 5AM as I couldn't stand the pain any longer. They put some anaesthetic in my eyes to relieve the pain but had sore eyes for many days after.
