Are we really bothered?
that a few sabre toothed frogs and other fauna (look it up!) get killed by the BP gulf oil slick?
Saw on telly that a million barrels a day of oil have been spewing from the burst pipeline for over 5 weeks?!?!?!
Whilst we can blame the greed of the oil comanies and the authorities that allowed the rig to be sited so close to shore, surely some of the blame as
to be the consumer, i.e. you dear reader* - since we all want out petrol to be a cheap as possible.
* note I exclude myself as I get my petrol from Tesco
What really puzzles me is that it has been leaking for so long and still not plugged. 
Why can't they call Bruce Willis, like they did to blow up that big asteroid? Surely there are more teams experienced with oil work than there
are drilling asteroids?

Humans are never going to win when we try to mess with nature.....
We like to think we are in control, but its things like this that prove we are not...
This is why things like genetically engineered microbes etc is a very very scary thing

You would think they would have a valve just over the site it comes out of the ground, and a plan.
We have a team of poeple who spend all day doing nothing, ready to deploy if a sub gets into trouble, you would think a petrol company would have the
same forward planning?

There is a valve at the top of the well... but they cant get it to close....
I get the feeling that oil companies are so in it for the proffit they have sort of given up on actually giving a monkeys.... hopefully this will put
the fear of god back into them and they might actually start investing the huge proffits in something useful!

They can I believe but then they contract out the drilling to the lowest bidder and don't check why they're cheap. Could it be because
they're going to cut a few corners? Who cares, they're just happy to increase there profits.

Im bothered when these things die out at our hands thats it for good.
As for Bruce Willis blowing up Asteroids he didnt really that was pretend, sorry to give you the bad news but I'd hate to see you go through
life labouring under a mishapprehension also Royal mail have never had an employee named Pat that rides around with a black and white cat sorry.

Apparently the current chairman of BP (in the post for 4 years I think) has gone on record as saying that the problems BP have are down to 15 years of
being run by an accountant - 20 years ago BP was one of the worlds best engineering companies. Since then they have been farming out jobs to the
cheapest bidder, saving money by employing cheaper less qualified 'engineers' or getting production supervisors to take over engineering
tasks etc... In the sunday times a couple of weeks ago he said they had lost over 60% of their engineers (while the company has expanded) and he had
doubts as to wheather they still had the engineering capabilites to solve their problemsthey have!(they have corroded/leaky pipes in canada/alaska and
several other big problems worldwide)

All companies like to make money. They don't like to spend it. Sound familiar to anyone? No loyalties, no nickel spent, unless it has been
scrutinised to the end by a large team of accountants.
It is extremely sad, and easy as it is to blame BP, all the big oil companies are in the same boat, so I doubt anyone else would have done it
differently. It is nothing short of a disaster. You are lucky nothing on that scale has happened in the North Sea - yet. I hope they stop drilling off
Newfoundland before it happens there. And they have talked about doing it off British Columbia. I would go to war to stop that. Become like those
looney Americans with their private militias etc.

I'm bothered as well
Long gone are the days when business included customer satisfaction, care for the environment, good service were all important factors in business.
Nowadays too much business is about the profit margin and the things that slip to create the profit are all of the above Look how often these big
companies post "record profits" - at what cost is that profit though?

I don't know exactly what they had in this case, but they normally do have valves - at least 3 of them, they are called 'blow out
preventers' [BOP's]

Bothered, probably. The world will recover. Given the plastic pollution in the Pacific and Atlantic gyres, and the thoroughly insignificant size of
this spill, I've got other things to worry about.
The only reason anyone cares is cos Obama is doing the typical sanctimonious American claptrap going on about American jobs and American people. He
seems to have forgotten the world outside (like all american presidents do, except when they make out they saved the world).
Given that the US is one of the heaviest users of oil on the planet, I think his rhetoric is rather hypocritical and he'd be better of seeing
what the great us of a can do to help rather than come up with artificial ways of increasing the cost of oil.
Remember Exxon etc !

BP have had a hard time but there are reasons. All of the problems they have had in the states are on ex Amoco facilities. The american workers have
allegedly not been hot on safety in thses sites. The company operating the well is not owned by BP. When the Exxon Valdis spilt all the oil in Alaska
there wasn't the same anger from the Americans then. The reason this is so focused is that Obama can make an issue of it. I care for several
reasons, the main one for me is that every pension fund in the UK has lots of Shares in BP, how low this will go will depend on how much pressure is
put on BP by Obama.
