Noise and Neighbours
In about three weeks time we will be holding a party of rmy Father-In-Laws 60th birthday. Nick likes a beer or two and a bit of a dance, so
we've invited a raft of friends and family and will have a party marquee in the back garden.
We sent out notes to the other seven houses in the close, telling them that we were doing this and that it would be finished by 10:30 p.m. We are
holding it on a Sunday night during term time.
We last had a party with guests in the garden about 8 years ago, and there was no music then and no noise save for conversation, and that all finished
by about 9.30 p.m.
Our next door neighbour came round to see us, expressing his displeasure about the fact that this was going on on a school night becuae his
son's bedroom is at the back of the house. His son doesn't go to sleep when he's meant to without disturbance.
Are we being unreasonable by wanting to hold a party in our back garden every eight years?

i would say you are being very fair.
a lot off people would not bother to what you are doing, i think you are with in the law up till 11pm any way.
i know some parties go on longer but normal just invite your neighbours, 9 times out of 10 they do not show any way, and they are happy.
i would go ahead.

Just do it. We had some plebs run a full blown PA system, for a kareoke night in the back garden.
I didn;t get a note or anything, but wasn't fussed, and would have remained with the live and let live attitude had they stop at
say...midnight.
It got to 2.30AM. Then I called the police.
As long as you are reasonable with the time it finishes -and 10.30 is VERY reasonable, then i think I'd just relax and enjoy the night.

Just speak to them face to face before hand. That's how I sorted out my problem with my neighbours.
Personally speaking a don't mind noise up to 10pm on a school night and 1am on a weekend, but I don't have kids.

Sod em!!!
You'll always get 1 who moans, when we had my sister's 30th last year we only had 1 complaint out of about 30 houses.
And that party went on until about 5am!!
We had a BIG PA and a well known London club DJ.
The only complain we had was because of the cars parking across somebody's drive(there was around 200+ guests), so after i moved about 10 cars
out the way(I don't drink), all was well.
As our neighbours said, that is the only party we've had in 30 years, so they were sure they could stand it!!
And it was on a wednesday night.
So what you're doing is perfectly reasonable, and they haven't a leg to stand on as far as complaining to anyone.

Yea I thing you must invite me too to your party.
I am in Somerset and I am really concerned that you will keep me awake that night.
On a more serious note, you have done everything right.
Just enjoy the night mate.

By the sound of it, it's your neighbour who's being unreasonable.
Crack on... have fun... and don't be drawn into any rows on the night!

Screw 'em.
It's not like you've pitched a tent right next to their house IE your house was next to theirs when they moved in...
My way of thinking is that if you buy a house and it's next to another house you're going to occasionally get some noise!!! IMHO
they're being unreasonable.

i wouldnt invite them. they sound like a stick in the mud
We dont get on with our neighbour. it started with him complaining about noise so stupidly i obliged his over sensitivity to noise by being even
quieter.
thinking i was doing the right thing at the time it only made him more sensitive when i had to make noise e.g digging up the concrete floors to fit a
gas supply and central heating.
there is a lot more of a story but it ended up with a copper sat in the front room.
on the plus side we haven't had a single complaint since.

if you offer people the chance the object they sometimes will. the big problem is that they have a child that is very poor sleeper.
you've done everything expected of you. get on and enjoy yourself.
your moaning neighbour should think themselves lucky.
we had some bad neighbours once: a bouncer and a lap dancer. didnt get back from work till 3-4am and would then either party or row.
i'm never going in one of those places: put me right off.
i'm ashamed to say this but the night they got burgled was one of the funniest of my life.

Every time we've thrown a party we;ve invited the neighbours - quite a few of them come round for a bit and have a laugh.
Most of my mates are from my Marines days, things can get a little 'energetic' and go on for quite a while (last time my missus fractured
3 ribs trying to emulate me and my old oppo in seeing who could summersault over the side of a childs bouncy castle first). Doesn't happen very
often and no-one can say they never had the chance to come and play along!
Don't worry about it - you've been more than reasonable in what you've done so far and it's an exceptional event rather than a
weekly occurrance, which we're all entitled to from time to time.

We had a neighbour and his wife who regularly invited another couple round, got very drunk and were laughing shouting and screaming 'til 6 in
the morning ... midweek! It wouldn't have been so bad, but being the height of summer we had to have the windows open or roast and they sat in
their extension with the patio doors, that point towards our house, open. After this happened too many times, I planned a day off to do some work,
waited 'til the hangovers should have kicked in and took an angle grinder and a lump hammer to some scrap steel in the garden. Oddly enough they
didn't do it again

The thing that annoys people the most is not being told that a party is going on and not knowing what time it will finish. A finish time of 10:30 is
reasonable. Mind you I am a friendly Environmental Health Officer some aren't!!!!!

I had the exact same thing with one of my neighbors and make a point of getting up early and cutting the lawns and trimming the hedges with a petrol
hedge trimmer. They also have school age kids and they seem to stay up as well until the small hours.

Neighbours at the back of us regularly have parties/barbeques, no loud music but loud talking and laughing ect going on until after I've gone to
bed. Not unreasonable though, even though last time I thought the missus had the telly on upstairs they were that loud.
Quietening down at 10.30pm on any night is reasonable
