Motorbike cooling ts125r
HI gang, some of you may know that my lad has a ts125r that has started to run hot and take out spark plugs! I've tried all the usual stuff
thermo stat, was a little late to open so chopped in half so now free flow (Suzuki thermostat £32!) Pump working fine, display calibrated and fine,
temp sensor in pan of water and resistance as it should be at various temperatuires. New jubilee clip on all the hoses as one was bit loose,
everytime I find something wrong I think I've cracked it, it then overheats and takes out another plug!!!
Have just noticed that the rad cap has got a few splits around the edge and as a result I can take off the cap when hot without bad things happening
so do you think, as it can't pressurise this is the reason for the poor cooling?

lower pressure would equal a lower boiling point for the water ???
so it could be causing you problems

Running a bit lean? That will heat it up...

Mixture or igntion timing for sure.
Running without a thermostat is a bad idea.

Mixture seems good, done a few few plug chops and they look ok to me. Standard air screw is 2 turns out and its about 2 and 1/8 out so fine for
me.
Ignition is done by the cdi unit under the seat and the stator screws are tight on the internal primary coil and the fly wheel, pick up sensor is
clean and close.
Just happened all of a sudden, he's been riding this bike for about 3 months with no cooling issues.
I understand that running it without a stat will take it longer to get to operating temp but why is it such a bad idea, may put one in after the fault
has been sorted, just trying to remove possible causes first.

Don't know that particular engine ...but could the woodruff key have snapped and timing slipped?
Does it have markings to allow you to use a strobe and double check its at the right place and not slipped?
Does the rad have good flow?
(eg not clogged/blocked up...again cheap to back flush with hose and refill with coolant)

Have just been out on it again and also noticed its smoking a bit more than usual even when warm and is whitish smoke, thinking it maybe be more
serious, burning coolant Getting seriously cheesed off with this motor now...

Thats not an option I'm afraid, funds won't allow, he's trying to save up for a car and insurance.
My moneys on a cracked waterjacket, will know more tomorrow. Pretty sure its the rad cap that initially caused the overheating, will be doing a
compression check and a head off job tomorrow.
Thanks for the comments so far and I'll update it tomorrow.

Looks like the bottom bore gasket has gone and was alowing coolent into the crankcase, this gasket has only lasted about 4 months Gone for a
proper suzuki top end set this time, also ordered the rad cap which I think caused the initial boils which probably caused the gasket to fail. Hoping
anyway...

Rich, its just reminded me of my RD350... pistons every other weekend and crank bearings... did it that often I could fix it on a Saturday morning
and be out wheeling around in the afternoon

Me too, but I was a suzuki man, RG250mk1 and the the 400 version, bloody lairy that bugger, gonna u2u you now.
