Thought for the day

Why do they bother putting Wattage controls on microwaves. Had a microwave now for six months (check me, so up to date with the gadgets) Never once moved it off the 700W setting.....

Surely the whole thing about microwaves is they cook stuff quickly. Turning it down is like having a speed limit in formula one Oh well, perhaps one day I'll find something which doesn't need it!

I guess you use it on a lower power for defrosting things

Effectively you've highlighted your lack of cooking skills, rather than a witty quip about microwaves. I assume you cook everything on full power when using your stove / grill / oven as well?

Bens popstar wages mean that his chef cooks for him, and pot noodles can be done at full power on the chefs day off....

I only use low power on the microwave for Christmas pudding!

Yeh I wish. My lack of wages means we've been living in a building site for six months cos I've got to do all the work so our "kitchen" is a mini oven which will fit one ready meal, a microwave which will fit another an a beer fridge which is big enough to contain one whole pint of milk..... Still we're getting there- and at least I know we won't get invaded by squaters- they have some standards don't you know

i use a low power setting to defrost chicken breasts. 150secs on 60% leaves it cuttable but frozen enough that it doesnt squirm, so you can chop it quick. Full power would cook the ends

Warming up your pet hamster after it has found it's way into the freezer?

Doesn't squirm? Aren't you supposed to kill first them rather than just cryogenically freeze them?

I've always wondered why they don't have a proper nuke setting. The norm is 700W I'd like a 1400W setting so the 5 min lasagne takes 2.5min

Things with a lot of water in them super heat on full power. Then they suddenly explode as the water all turns to steam all at one. Turn the power down and you can heat the food quickly but without leaving a film of it all over the inside of your oven.

Another reason is that microwaves only penetrate so far into large pieces of dense food. Lower power for longer time lets the heat soak into the middle without burning the surface.

FWIW, cheap microwaves do only run at full power, or off. So if you have a 700W microwave and ask for 350W then you get 6secs on 6secs off, etc etc.

I can´t remember who posted it, but my credit goes to him.
